Dating a 540R "Blueburst"

Well guys I decided to pick up a used 540R at GC. Its in good condition with a Blueburst finish and a H-S-S config. The fret wear I swear is almost non-exsistant, but the finish has some scratches and there is some wear on the bridge. Considering what I paid for it (I got'em down to $400) and it's all original and included the case I'm happy. What I'd like to know is how I find out the production year and month. The serial number is: F148376. Can anyone tell me from the serial number what I need to know, and if you can, please tell me how to do it so I can increase my knowledge about Ibanez guitars.

Thanks!

Danny

The first number in the serial is a 1 which means 1991. Your guitar was also the 48,376th one built that year. If you take the neck off, there should be an exact date in there.

Here's a link of how to date just about any Ibanez.

Re: Dating a 540R "Blueburst"

THANK YOU, Linkage! That link was a big help, as was your added information.

Alaska, Thanks! I was on the fence about buying it for almost 2wks. The big seller to me was the fret work and lack of wear on the frets. Its obvious that the guitar has been played if you look at the finish, but not if you look at the fret board. A little elbow grease and some guitar polish will fix up the finish. Also, the neck has far too much finish on it, so I'll carefully sand it down smooth to the wood and apply an oil (Tung most likely) finish. I may consider a re-paint later this summer. Something absolutely crazy and very bright. LOL!
