There was a thread just like this one less than a week ago... Anyway, a heat gun will do a great job, just make sure to scrape away the goo as you go along.

Re: easiest way to remove paint from a guitar?

do not try propane torch lol. I ended up sanding most of mine off I used a orbital air sander and a paper flapper wheel in tighter rounded aeas. the only issue is you have to make sure once you are down to wood to make sure you use a block and get it all flat again. I did hear that Heat gun will work and I think it kinda flakes off just keep movins so you don't scorch wood unless you want a burnt look. I have seen soem look really sweet and with teh paint you can get some really cool patterns as the paint pops off at different rates alowing to burn uniques patterns in the wood. it was a minor burn almos like a light to medium toasting.

Heat Gun and scraper , paints almost jumps off when you heat it with a heat gun.

Re: easiest way to remove paint from a guitar?

You might find that after you've burned the body trying to get paint off evenly and sanded it out of shape you can get whatever is left off with a chemical stripper - semi paste, and let it set until it starts to dry. Whatever you do is going to alter the body some, so buckle up. I found pretty good results using a 5" random orbital sander, starting with 80 grit and progressing to 320 as the paint came off - at least on the front and back. On the sides I used a drum sander on a cordless drill - I think I used 120 then 320 grit (maybe with 220 in there, too). I was surprised at how thick the paint and clearcoat was on the RG I stripped recently, almost like a skin of plastic over the whole thing, so fair warning. Whatever you do, it will be more work than you think it will.

Re: easiest way to remove paint from a guitar?

Stripping an RG is hell!!! LOL

I stripped 2 of mine over the years using all of the above methods and took my time. Both of my RG's had thick goopy layers and layers and layers that seemed to be like what lwchaffin said above.

Dont get impatient and plan for a long tough road. Let chemical strippers work, and get some good quality sandpaper..you'll be thankful you did.

If you plan to repaint you should be in good shape.

I've refinished furniture using a chemical stripper called Marine Remover that you can buy at any paint store. Use it with steel wool and gloves. The steel wool won't gouge up the surface.

Re: easiest way to remove paint from a guitar?

I find that some coarse sandpaper and a palm sander will do the trick really well on the front and back. doing the sides is awful but you can retain the factory sealant on the guitar if you are careful.

Re: easiest way to remove paint from a guitar?

I guess my preference for a chemical remover is that you won't remove any of the underlying wood or square up the chamfers on the edges of the guitar. You can also get the paint out of the pickup cavities that way.
