Edge III swap for another Edge model trem?

Got me a RG320FM amber with a cool fat looking flame pattern but after years of playing 'real' Edge and lo pro Edge model trems on my Jems and some of my other Ibanez's I am not just 100% knocked out with the Edge III. What Edge trems will retrofit the Edge III? Will the 'original' Edge? The Lo pRo Edge? Anyone know?
I still love my 'original' Edge trems...

I'm also interested in knowing whether or not this is possible (although I don't have an Edge III equipped guitar).

Can you take close-up pictures of the trem, and perhaps take some measurements?

What are the anchors and studs like on an Edge III?

Neither, I'm sorry to say. There was quite a discussion over this some time ago, when the Edge Pro first was introduced. A forum search should give you more answers.

The EDGE III is not an Edge Pro.

Expect to have some interference somewhere, but maybe not. Nobody will know until somebody trys.

Didn't mean to say it was, but they were introduced in the same period when Edge Pro vs Edge swaps were talked about - then also the Edge Pro II and Edge III.

Edit: Then again...

WTF?!? Look at page 86 of the new Ibanez catalog (found here: http://www.ibanez.com/catalog/IBANEZ...ECTORS_CAT.PDF). The Edge III is new for 2005. It's very similar in design to the Lo-Pro, although it appears to be of lower quality.

Looking at the close-up picture, it looks like the studs are smaller than the Edge studs. It also looks like the Edge III, and hence the trem cavity, is shorter than the Edge.

Re: Edge III swap for another Edge model trem?

I have an RG370DX with an Edge III and it totally rocks! I've never played on a guitar with an original Edge, so I really can't compare it to that. But it's definitely equal or greater to an EPII. From just looking at it, you can tell that it's definitely smaller than an EP/EPII so I doubt that retrofit will work. Of course, if you feel like doing a body re-route then who knows. To my knowledge, no one on this forum has posted about successfully doing such a thing.

Re: Edge III swap for another Edge model trem?

The question isn't if the Edge III will fit in an Edge Pro/II rout, the question is if an EDGE will fit in the same rout as the Edge III.

In other words, he wants to know if he can swap his budget trem for a good one without routing his guitar.

Isn't the edge pro III have the same route as the edge pro II?

if this is the case, the no you can't replace the edge pro III with an original edge or a lo pro edge. I don't think you can even put an edge pro in an edge pro III's route

Re: Edge III swap for another Edge model trem?

According to Ibanez and Rich, the Edge III is based on the original Edge (let's not call it Edge Pro III, as there is a reason why they made it based on the original Edge trem).

What does that mean? What's new and what's old design on this Edge III? It wouldn't be too much work to measure an Edge and an Edge III trem. At least that would give some approximate knowledge about the size.

If your observation is correct that would mean, you can't switch any of the Edge Pro bridges with each other (without modding). Nice going Ibanez .

Re: Edge III swap for another Edge model trem?

I wonder is you could swap an Edge III, for an OFR. Probably not... As much as people complained about the TRS trems, at least it was easy enough to replace them, without any mods. With the new Edges, you're stuck, if you don't like them.

Not really, if you don't like them don't buy a guitar that has one.

Simply save your money and buy one with the trem you like.

Re: Edge III swap for another Edge model trem?

So exactly why did they stop making the original Edge tremolo system in the first place? Manufacturing costs, or having to pay a license fee to Floyd Rose?
