Funny observation about Jemsite forums...
It seems that the People on the Other
Ibanez Guitars
forums play the hell out of their guitars, while the one's in the Prestige and JEM/UV talks about how mint their guitars stay...
NOt trying to offend anyone, but I play the hell out of all mine, everyone I've ever owned. Not abuse, but play it hard and play it loud!

I believe I fit your observation
I don't really play much if ever on my most beautiful guitars (PGM90th, RG2027, JEMBFP, RX750). My S520 is another story, that one gets abused daily.... I don't really care if something big happens to that one, it is definately my main axe
And that's precisely what you mean I guess, one scratch on a beauty and I might just as well cry. Getting my standard S-series and RG a vintage look is a natural thing, it just happens while playing...

I think that your observation couldn't be more wrong. Stick around awhile and you'll find that the majority of JEM/Prestige/J-Custom owners DO play their guitars regularly. I for one play every guitar I've got, and have gigged with all but 2 of them so far (the JEM77PMC and the UV77MC). There are some guitars that people naturally want to keep minty, like the JS10th, JEM10th, etc. But, for the most part, people agree that guitars are made to be played, not to gather dust.

You know? the very first thing that came to my mind when I read this post was a picture you posted once, of you gigging with a DNA

I play my Jem hard, but it's a little uncomfortable when I try to get it to rest flat on my body.

Please explain. I'm not sure I understand the rest flat against body part.

EBMM Petrucci
,
Double neck
, GMC....all on stage! I really couldn't concentrate on playing, fearing anyone would LOOK at my guitars!

LOL No no no, Caprile. Ya see, that's the whole POINT! I WANT everybody to look at the guitars...that way, they're distracted from the horribly inadequate sounds coming from them! It's all a clever ploy to make my playing appear to suck less.

I've wailed the bejabbers out of my RG570 ever since I got it new in 93, and the only marks on it are a teeny paint chip on the very edge of the headstock and a finish scratch between the volume and tone controlds which you can only see when you hold the guitar up under the light (and which was there when I bought it). I don't baby this guitar at all, I've just been lucky.
But I can understand wanting to keep a four thousand dollar guitar (that's how much Jems cost here) in immaculate condition. However, for me that would mean being careful not to, say, play guitar on the couch where the wooden armrest could knock the finish, and not chuck it headstock-first at my bed when I'm finished playing. But would I still wail the bejabbers out of one if I could afford/aquire it? You betcha butt.

I guess my real point is that while alot of the non-J Custom/signature and JEM. Universe type of owners tend to collect and bay their guitars, the other mass produced model owners tend to mod and play the hell out of theirs.
I know my 520 and 570 gets a good work out all the time.(Nicks and bruises are signs of experience and paying dues on the axe right?)

The real question is not whether you collect or not, but would you play (regularly & gig) a DNA, 90th, chromeboy, etc.
I mean would you spend $3750 for a DNA and put some real wear on it resulting in an eventual resale price at least $1000 lower? I'm actually waiting for someone to do it first and buy the DNA player (could be quite sometime though).
I wouldn't buy one to play, and if I won't play it, I won't buy it.
But if I did buy a DNA, I would definitely play it - how could you not?
I'd rather buy a used VWH, BSB, whatever, keep it in great condition, and play it all the time and lose only a few hundred on the re-sale value.
My goal is to own and play as many Ibanez guitars as I can - keep the ones I really like, and sell the rest to get...
MORE Ibanez guitars I've never had or played before.

Easy. Yes.
I've had somewhere in the neighborhood of 150+ different Ibanez over the last 10 years. There are VERY few models that I've not had. Each and every one has been regularly played, including the DNA, the JS10ths, etc. It's almost impossible to NOT play them, because the most valuable guitars are also the ones that look coolest onstage.

JS10th
I got a great deal on a pretty damn clean JS10, with all the strap/lead bitz and the case, and i played the hell out of it, everyday, for a few hours. and i used it for a few sessions (which turned some heads in the studio :P ) gigged it just the once to help out some friends. Ive sold it now, and i sold it for exactly what i paid for it. sure, it wasnt mint, but it wasnt at all in bad condition, and still with stunning looks, and tones.
just my two pence
