Gotten a Flame maple body from some Grayish silver Ibanez RG520

Now... I bought this guitar from E(vil)bay, with mahogany written on it. It was stamp RG520QS on the neck pocket but it was painted with flat Grayish silver. After assembling up my guitar.. I decided that the color is ugly.. and the dings kinda made it ugly (yea not those kinda relic stuff). So, I decided to take a gamble and sand of the finish and attempt an Oil Finish instead.



What can i say? Look at the quilted maple. Ibanez must be lazy or went out of stock when they wanted to produce the grayish silver ibanez RG520 and used a 520QS body instead... On my way to finish sanding the finish before oiling. Will post complete pics when i am done.

Nice unexpected find.

It's quilted sapele (hence QS), by the way, not maple.

Well the body is mahogany, so are you saying it's mahogany, then maple, then sapele?

I thought they were a sapele body, and quilted maple top.

Nope, they're mahogany with a quilted sapele top. Very overlooked instrument, IMHO - my 2000 520QSTK is still my go to guitar. Damned heavy, though.

Ya,I saw that on bay, almost couldn't resist bidding just to see what was under the paint. I used to buy every RG520QS blue/green body that came up for auction. I have enough now so quit buying them. They are my favorite Ibanez body, and yes they are sapele on mahogany.

I have tons more to sand away tho. The only bad part about sanding it down is I can see the veneer line where the top meets the body. But, no bigger. Ibanez really uses thick paint man...

That's beautiful. I have an RG520QSTB and I love it. As others have said, they're unbelievably heavy.
