Help classic RG520 or new model?

Hi all new member here. I'm after an RG but don't know if I should go for a 1999 RG520 in blue with original pickups, chips around sides and small crack by locking nut retaining screw which is going for 230USD, or a newer model which would be Indonesian for what I could afford. I'm attracted to the RG520 for the edge bridge and the fact it's made in Japan but is that reason enough to buy a worn in guitar? Would love to hear opinions especially if anyone has the 520. Cheers.

If you don't mind the worn look, yypically I'd say RG520 for sure, but the crack does cause concern. Could you provide a pic?

I used to own one of those - the finish is extremely brittle (as was common for Ibby around that time, I don't know if they're better these days). It was a great guitar - the Wizard neck was extremely thin, really too thin for me to be comfortable on it (I'm a strat guy at heart), but it played very well, sounded great even with the stock pickups, and the trem is awesome. If the crack is small and/or stable, I'd grab this. I only let mine go when I traded it in to get my first seven string (which while I no longer own that particular guitar, the seventh string really clicked for me, so it was the right decision).

I have owned two (and currently own one) RG520 and they are as solid as any Ibanez you'll find.

Thanks guys really appreciate the replies. Sorry no photo , the crack is about 2" and runs parallel with neck straight through the nut retainer screw hole on the high E side. Was also thinking about neck thickness as i'm used to my js100 or strats, but it felt ok, though I only played it for 10 mins! Just trying to avoid another mistake like the epiphone les paul I never bonded with which now has to go. Cheers.

I don't know that I would consider a 2 inch long crack small, did you happen to notice how deep the crack is by looking in the nut screw hole? That might give you an idea of the severity. Does it look like an old crack, in which case it is more likely to have stabilized?

Hi JSibanez, it did look like an old crack with dirt in and around it, just a hairline that you barely notice running your finger over. I'll try and get another look at it tomorrow and take some photos. Searching around it seems a common problem, maybe I can use it to get it cheaper. I'm pretty handy so if it's just a case of gluing and clamping it should be ok.

Just found a great tutorial here:

http://www.ibanezrules.com/tech/setup/crack_neck.htm

The neck on the guitar I'm looking at is nowhere near that bad.

Oh jeez, that's a totally different sort of break - there;s a difference between a hairline crack extending through the locking nut screw, and what's a partially snapped off headstock, which is what you're looking at here.

I was expecting something like this:

Help Wanted! RG550 Nut Neck Crack Has Appeared

Hi yes I know it's different, but as he states in the tutorial it's the same repair procedure for both types of crack. I'm only looking at a hairline crack which I was thinking are pretty common on these older necks, maybe I'm wrong.
On a positive note the les paul has sold so I'm going today with cash in my pocket, expect pictures tomorrow I'm a compulsive buyer!
