Help on identification...

On a whim I bought this body off @bay that was advertised as an RG550. Plainly it's not (even I spotted that) but I don't know for sure what it really is.

Can anyone enlighten me please?

Cheers

I'd just like to add that that paint job is not mine

Well if it is indeed Ibanez then maybe it's a very badly abused 520?

I dunno, what wood is it made out of?

Re: Help on identification...

the cavity doesn't look deep enough to be anything japanese fitted with an edge or lo pro. But having said that, there isn't much i can tell from a pic. Depth from this angle would probably be the hardest thing to spot so maybe ignore my observation.. haha.

not a 500 series, the trem route is for a lo-trs. most likely an rg 320/220 out of basswood.

Agree with rich. Why did you buy it knowing it wasn't what it was advertised as?

Definitely not a 500 series body, or even a 400 series.

Re: Help on identification...

Thanks for all the responses - I can't even say for sure that it's a genuine Ibanez body to be honest and I sure as hell don't know (yet) what wood it is.

In response to Ibateur, it was just a spur of the moment thing and to be honest I wasn't bothered that it wasn't a 550 as I was just looking for something cheapish as a first project.

One more I didn't mention is the input jack is mounted in an oval face plate - all my other Ibanez's are recessed with just a small locking ring

Yes, 220 or 320. Probably basswood. Strip it all down and give it a decent paint job or use it as a learning tool by experimenting. I hope you got it cheap.

Re: Help on identification...

Hey Satchmo, I hope you didn't take offense. I didn't mean to offend.

The oval jack is the sign of a Korean body.

To be honest, if you drop an OFH there, and do the rest of the work, you're still pretty well off (if you got it cheapish).

Some guys have been able to retrofit an original edge into those bodies. If you have a neck, or funds to get one (*bay or a custom), that's a good project.

I was thinking of getting a project together with my work bonus, but as soon as my wife heard my thoughts...

No offense taken whatsoever Merely explaining why I bought what plainly wasn't what it was advertised.

It was cheapish but probably not as cheap as it should've been given its dodgy provenance but bits in the UK aren't as plentiful as elsewhere and it's a starting point for a project at least.

Next big question is what to do with the bloody thing - apart from setting fire to it that is - and I have in mind to try a faux marble effect on it, albeit a white marble with purple veins. It'll be unique but whether in a good way remains to be seen.

When you do take the pains to do the marble-izing, don't forget to post pics. We're all whores for project pics.

Good luck!
