You need both of these (the RG3120 and the '61 SG RI), so start saving for the Gibson and play the RG in the meantime.

I would keep the 3120 and pick up a faded sg.
I was going to buy a standard and I tried the faded on the advice of the salesman (who is also a friend) and my set up guy.
Its a really great guitar and its a great price for it. You can probably pick a new one up for under $600.

Apple VS orange.

On your second question, the SG has the best high fret access of any guitar known to man but it only has 22 frets.

Re: Ibanez RG3120 VS GIBSON SG

I think you'd get depressed pretty soon after getting rid of that RG for a SG. I've got a bunch of H-S-H locking trem equiped guitars and a SG standard. The SG feels so outdated compared to the modern militia. Every single note needs just a bit more attention...high note access is very good, the string tension is really low, but you're picking hand is way too far to the left. The Jem/RG shape and ergonomics are PERFECT. Also the SG lacks pure power compared to a shred-like axe. Nice sweet tone, though. And ubercool looks, ofcourse.
