Ibanez RG's Have Sold More Than You Think!!!

I recently read an interview with Steve -
he was quoted as saying that because he designed the RG out of the Jem, he gets royalties on quantity sold and gets the shipping numbers from Ibanez -and they indicate the RG has sold more than ANY OTHER GUITAR IN HISTORY EXCEPT THE STRATOCASTER.

Quite a feat.

I always believe it.
I believe Ibanez is the biggest name of guitar industry, fender and gibson is only the 'oldest' name.
RG comes number two behind stratocaster is outstanding! the stratocaster is born in 1954, while RG was born in 1987, and still catch the 2nd place after 33 years behind the strat? WOW!

When I first played a 550 I was blown away. Until then I had loved Jacksons/Charvels for their flat/thin necks. The 550 killed them and I have been a Ibanez Player ever since without looking back.

Give it time and Ibanez will beat the Strat!

Re: Ibanez RG's Have Sold More Than You Think!!!

I'm not sure if I believe that. It does only say "indicated that" - there are no actual facts or statistics. I could indicate that more Flying Vs have been sold than Strats - I'd just be wrong.

LPs have been around since '52, and I believe they have sold VAST amounts more than the RG, having been prevalent in rock, blues, etc. since that time.

Plus, I'm not sure about the Vai thing. Ibanez designed the Jem, and endorses Steve with it. His name, lent to it, helps it sell. Hence his royalties. Ibanez took THEIR design, and modified it to REMOVE the Vai association. I doubt he gets any royalties in that.

Sorry Danny, but you are incorrect- Steve actually designed the guitars and Ibanez cannot change a thing without Steve's OK. That is why Steve went with Ibanez - they gave him total authority over the guitars.
BTW- the RG's are nothing less than a stripped-down JEM- most people think it's the other way around -that the Jem was born of the RG- but it's not true.

Re: Ibanez RG's Have Sold More Than You Think!!!

Maybe the statement was taken the wrong way. Perhaps, for this year the RG has outsold everything but the strat? That would make more sense. The Stratocaster sells a lot because it is revered as a "normal" guitar to those who have no knowledge or beginners, affecionados purchase the more expensive caliber and many musicians both intermediate and professional rely on strats for their ease of play and varied tonal range. It's a great instrument.

I have a love for both stratocasters and Jems. I could not be a proper musician without either. Without a doubt, i can play just about the same things on either, but the Jem will never sing the blues like my Strat does and my strat will never scream like the Jem does or play anything past it's 21st fret :P

Re: Ibanez RG's Have Sold More Than You Think!!!

wow, that is impressive

but it sounds more impressive than it really is... because there are so many fender strat copies, and only a percentage of those are actual Fender Stratocasters.

Gibsons are expensive, and again, there are alot of LP copies, so it makes it seem like there is alot more than there is, i guess.

And Teles are so ugly, no one wants them...so what else is there? There really isn't any other guitars that i can think of that come close.

Ibanez RGs can be really cheap, so naturally they will sell more than Fender Strats. However, i bet combined Sales of Epiphone LPs, and Gibson LPs, would surpass RGs.

I think we were all refering to real strats and not the copies. How the hell would you be able to tally them up anyways. There a guitar fabricators around the globe that make similars or replicate them. But i was speaking of Stratocasters. That is the only name it has and it belongs to Fender. anything of similar nature bears another name. Still, even if copies were included, the results would be pretty much the same. All except the fact that tallying RG up to numero two would be hard since i doubt many people clone RGs
