Looking for a kids guitar

Heres the problem,

I am looking for a good starter guitar for my son. He's 8 and has been bugging me for awhile to play guitar. I let him play mine but they are too big for him. I was thinking about buying him the Ibanez I dont remember the model but I am watching one on evilbay. Does anybody own one of these. Exactly how much smaller are they pics would be helpfull. I am also open to suggestions. Although he wants a guitar like mine. : )

Thanks

Have you thought about the Mini Strat?

Re: Looking for a kids guitar

Check out the Ibanez GRGM21. Do a search for it on your favorite music site or Google it. It's a mini axe like the Mini-Strat, but it's an RG. Looks like an RG550, and has sharktooth inlays as well. Perfect for the aspiring young rocker!

I think it's pretty much 3/4 scale, like the Mini-Strat. I actually got my kid a Mini-Strat when she was about seven (the IBZ wasn't available then), and it was a good size for her to learn on. Problem was, it wasn't exaclty high-end, and it wouldn't stay in tune at all. I upgraded the bridge and tuners, which helped. As soon as she was big enough to play the full sized RG's, I built her one. She was about 10 when she switched to a full size. She still had to stretch a little, but it's good exercise!

Re: Looking for a kids guitar

I know Samick made/make a few mini-guitars that are great, with full-sized humbuckers too. If your looking for something really nice though, try finding an old Chiquita guitar. They were amazing back in the 70's and 80's. It was even good enough for Marty Mcfly in Back to The Future!

Heres the Chiquita:-

The Ibanez GRGM21 mentioned above is also awesome!

Thanks man, I didnt even see that one. There does not seem to be alot of options out there when it comes to kids guitars. I wonder how the mini strat compares in size the Ibanez "mini" guitar

Re: Looking for a kids guitar

My 7 year old daughter wanted a guitar, so like an idiot I bought a full size strat clone. Of course I need to find something more befitting her size.

Re: Looking for a kids guitar

I think they're about the same size - they're geared toward the same market. The IBZ has a slightly shorter scale length (22.2" vs. 22.75" for the mini-strat), so I guess it might be a tad smaller.

The Mini-Strat is available in red or black. the IBZ is available in red, black, blue and white. Also, the IBZ has 24 frets, while the strat has 20.

Just get him a Jem, he he kidding, stewart macdonald has 3/4 scale guitar kits that far surpace the quality of any squier or Ibby gio. My father made me one when I was 4. He said it wasnt very difficult.

I looked at stew mac all I saw were acoustic kits. I remember my dissappointment when I was 4, I begged my parents for a guitar and was bummed out they got me an acoustic I appreciate an acoustic now(though i havent owned one in about 15 yrs lol) but he wants an electric so thats what I am going to get him. Thanks I appreciate the response

Re: Looking for a kids guitar

I bought a squire 3/4 size for my boss's son.

It rocked, actually really well made for a £100 guitar.

Ibanez grg is on the way, man I can't wait to see the look on his face its gonna be awesome. When he graduates college then I'll buy him a Jem or Maybe Ill get "him" one now and give to him when he graduates college. I'm sure he won't mind if I play until then.
