Maxxas - anybody have one/play one? Just got one............

I just acquired a nice Maxxas. I was never really aware of them until recently while flipping through some ebay auctions. Let me tell you. I have played MANY guitars. Owned too many to even remember (really). And this guitar is a better playing/sounding guitar than a 3,000.00 PRS. It is easily as nice as my Jem Floral. While mine is not the "coolest" color, I will definately be keeping this guitar. Not to mention the body shape is very cool.
I just need to find one in Black now......................
There is a picture on my bands website under "see us" - O'Day pictures.
This is really a unique guitar. After finding out about their history, I am just glad to be able to get my hands on one. These guitars are GREATLY undervalued - period!

I've got a black one, I've got a black one The color doesn't say anything about the sound, which rules ofcourse. See you've got a MX-2. Very nice with the Edge-trem on it. A Maxxas, a Maxxas, what a wonderful tohoy...everyone wants a Maxxas

i've got an MX-3, and i can tell you that's among the best guitar i've ever tried ever.
it's got an incredible piano-ish sound, low-ish freqs (due to the mahogany-built body) huge thick tone and infinite sustain (due to resonance chambers inside).
but its best is the dynamics: you can play either as low as a butterfly and as loud as a Jumbo. not so easy to control!
and the IBZ/USA pickups are speechlessly great!

absolutely great guitar, try one if you ever get the chance!

Yes, the sound is what is really amazing - it has qualities of many different guitars, but is still has its own "unique" tone. Mine really "screams with harmonics"! It is probably one of the best sounding and playing guitars I have ever owned. I think I may have to have one of EVERY color, so I guess I need 2 more.........................
The really strange thing is how "cheap" these guitars are selling used for. I will definately be on the look out. This guitar is easily worth as much as my 3000.00 PRS just because of the tone and playability.......now add age and rarity - its a good thing a lot of people don't know what they are or how few were made, because honestly, I would not part with mine for anything less than 2000.00. I don't care what "other" people say they are worth - mine is owned for life.
Texter, I don't suppose you want to part with that Black one do you??

I could not believe:

1. Honduras Mahogany body - with carved sound chambers
2. Solid maple neck - rosewood freboard
3. Killer body shape
4. 1400.00 new in 1986 dollars
5. 300 or less made
6. Top notch hardware and pickups

Name me ONE other Ibanez that rare or nice................??

Anyone else want to jump in and list some more?

Personally, I've tried a Maxxas and I think they're very nice, but I prefer my PGM or even SC1620 more. It's all a matter of personal preference. I'm really glad that you've found the guitar of your dreams, though! Always good to hear when someone matches up with a guitar like that...congrats!

Personally, i'd rather have the metallic teal than black, but to each their own... sweet guitar.

Granted, I have not played all those Ibanez guitars listed, but I have had 3 Jems, probably 1/2 dozen RG's, a Radius a 7 string RG, and this is the best Ibanez I have played tone wise - yes my RG's play nearly as well, but the sound this guitar has is definately its own.
Just my .02...........BTW, is there a Ibanez guitar that has had such a low production and been so inexpensive used? Did not think so.

You know what low production means? Nobody wanted them when they were available. You know what low resale means? Very few still want them.

this is such a crazy crazy world...

anyway, i've got a Roadstar (RS530) and a ProLine which got AMAZING sound, really, but the Maxxas stands a step above.
i've also got a PII which sounds really really great, as well as my Radius and my RBM do, but my RGs really dont play like that.
sure, great, but not THAT great.

Ibanez wanted to build a better guitar. Well so they did. A Jem is more anatomically correct and it does have some nice features like that little capacitor for clean sounds, but it's not as good as a Maxxas.(remember that pathetic heel on early jems? Maxxas already had the AANJ) Even my Jem90HAM can't stand up to my Maxxas. People are more shocked when they start playing it than when they first see it. Even Ed Roman liked it. He hates Ibanez. I don't think there can be any more discussion about it, since they're out of production and too rare.

Rich, I understand nobody wanted them - but it was probably due to their high retail cost new - I have read 1400.00 new in 1987 - which if memory serves me right, was MORE expensive than a Jem. If nobody wants them, or cares to pay that much for them, that is fine by me, I'll just pick these little babies up when they go up on ebay or elsewhere for so little.
I have been an Ibanez player/owner for 10 years, I did not even know these guitars existed until about 3 months ago.
But what a guitar is worth changes. If you ask me, 3500.00 for a swirled DNA Jem is insane...............you know why, the only people buying them are guitar collectors - how many of those guitars are going to see the inside of some smoke filled bar?
The point I am trying to make is, for the money, they are a GREAT guitar to own, and in my opinion (I know, it means nothing here) - compared to some other guitars that cost twice or three times as much, its a steal. That is if you can find one.
Rich, I would be more than happy to take any Maxxas off your hands if you get one, I DO want it.

No no... your opinion doesn't mean "nothing" here, but it is only an opinion. I think it's great, and a lot of Maxxas players love their guitars more than any other. I think it's just that some people may interpret what you said as trying to state in an almost factual way why Maxxas guitars are better than any other Ibanez out there, past and present. Which isn't a belief held by most Ibanez players. That's all.
If you're happy with it, that's all that matters! But don't think you're going to convert everyone
