I guess it's because he can tune to a drop tunning.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
It annoys me how Mick Thompson bad mouths 7-strings. I'm 16 and when i bought a 7-string (my first proper guitar besides a yamaha pacifica and all) i was 14 odd.
The 7-string i bought was because of people like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, not 'KoRn' or 'Bizkit' and when 7-string guitarists like me get lumped into the sterotype of one finger riffers it annoys me - despite the irony of me actually tunning to AEADGBE and keeping to the first 5 strings.
When i play guitar, i play one finger chords, with a scale format over the top of them (it's hard to explain). When you get Mick Thompson saying "You should learn to play a 6! I hate 7-strings! 7-strings suck, thus you suck!" it puts a downer on the music. Slipknot was a good band when they first came out, but they went downhill with success... The fact is that lots of people were getting out of the 7-string style at the time because of Slipknot downtunning to B or A. Even i before i bought my 7-string, was tunning my cheapo Encore strat copy to B and A with sets of .11. This was causing havok to my guitar (despite it being **** - lets be honest) and my playing.
Downtunning did no better for my musical theory then a 7-string. If anything, the 7-string has done more for me then downtunning has because i'm able to take a solo without sounding like a rhythm part... When you get Mick Thompson being a hypocrit and telling people to learn 6-string, then straight away downtunning his to subsonic levels, it puts a great irony onto his music. I've read that he has 6-string standard tunned guitars in his home which he "likes to rip on" but that's no good unless he brings out a solo album...
What i love even more about Mick Thompson being a massive hypocrit is that - from what i hear - he absolutely loves Meshuggah.... PLEASE HOLD ME BACK FROM POINTING OUT THAT MESHUGGAH USE 7 AND 8-STRING GUITARS!!!
Besides, I find it great hearing about Slipknot on guitar forums. Everyone rants about Mick Thompson saying how great his guitar, his playing and whatever is. How's Jim Root comming along huh?
From what i hear, he just sits back and enjoys the fame ride. If i were in his position, i'd get little satisfaction from playing with Slipknot. When you pick up a guitar magazine, it'll say "SLIPKNOT INTERVIEW INSIDE" and have a picture of Mick Thompson on the front... Only. That can be pretty demoralising.
On the guitar aspect of this, if Ibanez were to bring out a
signature guitar
, they would **** up, imensly. I can't really proove this, but they never seem to get it spot on for Heavy metal guitar signatures. I remeber a while ago that Mick Thompson called Ibanez "Mass marketting pricks" and said he was with BC Rich because they "Didn't have a production line and put effort into every guitar". That's sort of stupid as far as i can see. He gets given free top quality Ibanez guitars, and he's switched like that! *clicks fingers*
I can see the MT100 (Mick Thompson signature - i automatically call it that becuase it
will
be a cheapo Korean guitar for the kiddies) being a flop.
It will have:
- EMG-HZ pickups (Oh god, how we all love these)
- A terrible inlay (Lets face it. This is catch22 for Ibanez. They're doomed if they put it on because it's terrible, and they're doomed if they keep it off because that's what Mick has)
- A cheapo floyd bridge, or a cheapo fixed bridge (not FX).
The only upside i can see to this guitar is that it
may
be a thru-neck (doubt it to be honest. Probably a fixed neck passed off for a thru-neck), and a
reversed headstock
.
Just my 2pence

Re: Mick from Slipknot + new Ibanez
If they did make a cheapo version of a
Mick Thompson
signature model, I think that it'll be the equivalent of an RGT42. The only differences will be a few superficialities and probably some covered
INF pickups
like on the S540.

micks a good player, not AMAZING, but still can hold his own. i actually thought slipknot got better with IOWA and actually put out some metal on that stuff. as far as root, im sure hes doing great, last time i saw a cover it had both of them on it, from what ive gathered his personality seems like the more kinda guy id hang out with, more than mick. between slipknot and stone sour im sure root gets plenty of satisfaction out of playing. im sure he likes laying in the background and not sounding like an ass in every interview.

Re: Mick from Slipknot + new Ibanez
I'm not a fan of the sfx....frankly the bridge on the RGA series is far superior to it...I might be biased since I just tried an RGA out....but the SFX or any other string through just doesn't cut it

Re: Mick from Slipknot + new Ibanez
Is the bridge that's on the new RGA's a string-thru? I was under the impression that it was, but I've not found one of those guitars to check out for myself yet.

I mean no offense but you're talking absolute crap!
For a start that bridge is called an Ibanez Fixed (or FX) Edge, not an 'SFX'.It's the same bridge that was fitted to the JS2000CG's.
It's NOT a string through bridge, it's a
locking bridge
.
So how can you say that one type of bridge, which you seem to know absolutely nothing about, is 'superior' to another completely different type of bridge?
What's 'superior' about it ?
Please enlighten us with your 'knowledge'.

Oh yeah sure, there's no doubting that Mick Thompson can play guitar well, just his opinions on 7-strings and other things are least desirable
One thing i can say is that their original debut and the release before "Mate, feed, kill, repeat" were their best offerings. Metal meets drum'n'bass. You don't get many original things like that. When they started saying they were going to get heavier they went downhill - Imho.

Re: Mick from Slipknot + new Ibanez
opinions on slipknots music aside i would love to see a ibanez sig mick thompson even with the
reverse headstock
, i usually dislike reverse headstock
ibanez guitars
but his red one is pretty sweet, and the black one... well black super strat strats with all over binding make me j my p's and i reckon this could sway some customers away from jeackson or esp, but then again this is just my personal preferance for ibanez guitars... still they are sexy looking with their emgs and neck thru design...

Re: Mick from Slipknot + new Ibanez
If Ibanez was smart enough to make a Prestige Mick Thompson signature that had the specs of an RGT220 with EMGs then they would be sold out of them for atleast a year....guaranteed.

Re: Mick from Slipknot + new Ibanez
The video where Jim Root has the black Charvel is 'Before I forget'. The video starts with a good look at his guitar. Its a STRAT shape, black,
maple fret board
, gold hardware (original
strat trem
), and EMG's. It is NOT a telecaster design - that model was his fender sig model...which I dont think hasbeen marketed. This guitar is used in the video where the chorus goes "push my fingers into my eyes".
I dont know if that is any use what-so-ever to anyone!!!!

Re: Mick from Slipknot + new Ibanez
The black Telecaster he used for a while is a standard
Custom Shop
model called the 'Flathead'.
It's got a crossed piston inlay at the twelfth fret.

No disrespect, but you have no way of knowing that, and the way the market went for the K7, I wouldn't be surprised if a Prestige Mick guitar tanked.
They're better off going the MMM1 route.

Re: Mick from Slipknot + new Ibanez
Jim had the Tele flathead but he got one of the new Charvel's and he loves it, so he's swiched to that for his main guitar.
