Yeah, anything in the 500 series is ideal as they all have edge or lo-pro edge trems. The 550s have pickguards, and the 570's dont - another thing to take into account. What kind of finish do you have planned?

I would suggest a 550, since its already routed for a pickguard and you can get on with lo pro trem.

And, instead of chopping holes in it, just paint the monkey grip.

If you're going to mod an RG into a JEM, assuming you're going to go all the way, i.e., monkey grip, lion claw, PUs, and inlays, wouldn't that set you back 'bout as far as JEM?

i dont think it will, considering the woodwork i can do on my own(with exception of the neck inlays) and pickups are pretty cheap, im thinking about 5-650 for a full conversion after the purchase of the axe.

$500 to 600 PLUS guitar?

It would be cheaper in the long run just to save up the cash and get the real thing.

well considering a jem is 1800 brand new, i think its a hell of a lot better to find a used guitar for about 2-400 and turn it into a jem then buying one new, there just to damn expensive for what they are, solid body bolt- on guitars with gold hardware, its asking WAY TOO MUCH FOR THEM!!! i really feel as though they shouldnt cost more then 1000 but thats even pushing it.

Secondhand they're much less than $1800. Last I knew, Rich's new price was in the $1600 range. If the mods are going to be done properly, i.e. routing the wood and then refinishing the entire body, replacing the pups and having someone like Jeremy do the inlays and scalloping the frets, I'm confident it will be cheaper to buy a used VWH -- maybe even new.

well searching on ebay and other places the cheapest i can find one used is 1200, which is WAY out of my price range right now, i would rather mod one anyway since im in the middle of having to buy a car and get ready for college so, if i wanted a real 7vwh i would have to put one of those off, which is not an option, and i a damn good woodworker so i know what im doing when it comes to mods, hell i have built my own guitar already!
