NGD! 1986 Ibanez Proline 2550SP!!

I was in the market for a cheaper guitar (but I still wanted good quality). I decided the best way to go would be an older guitar, and decided on a Proline. Of course, it was not an easy task to find one. I decided I liked the 1770's and 2550's the best (which were only made in 1986). I saw a few come and go on e*** and the c-list, however, none were in very good shape, or one that was closed at $550.

Then I found a Proline 2550 on Craigslist in Arizona for $300 which was supposedly under this woman's bed for years. I asked them to ship, but they wouldn't-worried about scams (I had more to worry about than them!). The night after I found it, we went to a graduation party. My wife thought (actually thinks ) I was crazy, but I asked the hostess if she knew anyone who lived in Arizona. She said no, but a woman sitting with me said "yes." I said, "well, it's the Pheonix area." She said yes. I said "well, technically Apache Junction." She said, my sister in law just moved from there to Pheonix, it's about 20 minutes away. She asked why, and I explained it to her. She said she thought her sister in law may do that. Well I e-mailed this lady, she wrote back and then asked the woman from craigslist to see the guitar. She bought it, I sent her money for it, and shipping/handling, and just got it Thursday!

Other than the finish, which doesn't look so silver, or pearl anymore, this thing is in excellent shape! The case is original with no marks, all candy was included. There was even the original warranty card the woman who sold it never sent in. She bought it when she was 14! The guitar functions perfectly, the original edge trem stays in perfect tune (after owning a guitar with an Edge Pro (with a locking stud mod) I have to say this performs even better). I'm thinking about switching the stock pups for some lace sensors to get more of the Fender Vibe. I'm also considering doing a small route so I can have a little more pull up on the trem. Also-Many thanks to metalhead52 who was willing to pick up a PL1770 at a local pawnshop! (I would have gone that route had craigslist not panned out)

(neck throughs are so sexy)

I've no idea how that fancy switching system works but I love the look of these old prolines

Great guitar mate. Congratz on an awesome score. I've always wanted one of those since I seen the ad below back in the '80s of PG with a Proline in Guitar Player magazine. I'd always played Strats up to them and seeing this ad got me started on Ibanez guitars.

Great score! I would have went the 2550 route too. The nech thru is beautiful. I may pick up the copper metallic for myself. Wife says I gotta buy her a new couch first. In due time...

Hey guys. Thanks for all the comments! I'm pretty stoked. Is there any polish/cleaner that would restore the silver, or is there no hope after 23 years?

Hey thanks! The switching system is pretty easy, and cool. If you click the very top (closest to neck) pickup, it bypasses the five way tone switch (will be a killswitch if you want), then the next three are the neck, middle and bridge pickup, you can turn any or all on at once. Finally, the last is a split for the bridge. It's pretty cool. Can't wait to hear it with a pickup upgrade...

Nice score. The Proline you have is a great one. I agree with your decision to buy an older guitar. My last two purchases (both basses) have both been Matsumoku-built instruments from 1983 -- an Aria Pro II SB-R 150 and a Westone Thunder II Active. Both are exceptional instruments and put to shame anything brand new for the equivalent money. To get anything up to this kind of standard nowadays you'd have to spend a lot of cash, especially the Aria. I worked it out that the SB-R 150 would now be somewhere in the region of £2000 if it was being made today.

Great Craigslist story! Funny how stuff works sometimes. But looks like it was worth it. Congrats!
