For the ones that have two small rail mags on the outside instead of plastic spacers, taking the outer mags out helps. A mag swap makes quite a difference too.
I did a pup swap and put an '88 IBZ/USA humbucker in the neck. Less hassle and it sounds good.

50k DC resistance? Both bridge pups measure around 12.20 and the neck pup is 12.48. These are lower resistance than the IBZ/USA (14.89) that I put in the neck position.

Thought so. Still, you never know.

Oh yes. I love the Armstrong switching system. In the photo above the red one has the Armstrong switching as well. So does the Blue Burst. Not the Red Burst though, I don't think.

I have two HSS guitars now and they're set with the Armstrong wiring as well. It's like magic.

Here is the original article from 1987. Click it for an easier read and more info:

Re: NGD: '89 540R HH in Jewel Blue

It's versatile indeed, all those series and parallel options; haven't tried it myself but like a bit of switcheroo. My PL (HSS) has somewhat extended switching options so all three on are possible, as well as neck+bridge.

I like the Brian May system too, though that doesn't allow for parallel in its original form. There have been some folk who have fiddled with it by adding a 8PDT switch to allow for switching between parallel and series, but that's a lot of spaghetti inside the guitar!

The 1987 Radii are prefect for the Dan Armstrong system as no extra drilling is required .

There are a few 540Rs on ebay right now. Most are expensive. The prices on these have really jumped in the last year it seems. $200-$300 jumped in some cases.

There is a JB HSH 540R for auction now. Free shipping, best offer choice.
Another JB that's HSS.
Ruby Red HSH, too.

I saw those and they're great, but I really have my heart set on a JB HH. If I'm running myself into debt on guitars, its gotta be worth it, LOL!!!

Well, you never know when one of those will pop up. As I said in the OP, I waited 7 years.
