Technically, I got this 2.5 weeks ago, not today. It plays/feels pretty much exactly like my stock 1989 540-S (Saber). If looks like the back trem cavity was drilled for the back-stop too, so I think that it's originally from that year. The guy I bought from said that he and his buddy pieced it together from parts, but I think that the neck is from a Saber too, because like I said, it looks/feels like my stock 540-S.
The guy removed the paint and left it natural. It's not just
tung oil though. There's a light clear coat of some sort. He's also put EMG 81 and 60 with the SA in the middle. He said it was orignally H-S-S and it was routed to get the H-S-H.
I think I'm going to strip this clear coat and just tung oil finish it. While I'm stripping, there's some nicks here and there I'll try to smooth out. It hasn't been abused, just well-played. Neck and frets seem to have plenty of life in them too. I'd also like to put a
mahogany face on the headstock (idea stolen from eruji from his thread about refinishing his 540-S).
I'm not sold on the EMG's yet. I thought it would be a fun project guitar, and a heavily mod'd 540-S would be a nice complement to my totally stock one.
