Original Heel to Contoured Heel

Someone on this board did a conversion on their RG to give it the sculpted style heel when it was an original block RG heel and I can't find the thread.

If anyone out there has done this, please post a description of what's involved in the process.

I have a project I'm looking to do this with and haven't a clue where to begin.

Cheers,
Danny

Re: Original Heel to Contoured Heel

Personally, I would not try this. Yes, I have seen it done somewhere but I have to ask "to what end"? With plenty of AANJ bodies and necks floating around, I just don't see the logic in doing all that woodwork. I would rather get a blank from stewmac or similar and just make the body from scratch as it would probably be only a little more effort. Just my 2 cents.

Re: Original Heel to Contoured Heel

I find it's really hard to access the higher frets with this type of neck joint. The AANJ is in the other hand. How about everyone?

Re: Original Heel to Contoured Heel

i wouldn't do that kind of job, too. get a AANJ'ed body instead. if you're not very good on wood works, you'll be finding yourself in trouble and you may be trashing that body.

Sell it and buy a an AANJ body and neck then, don't ruin an old heel guitar.

Re: Original Heel to Contoured Heel

Steve Vai made that change to Flo which is a re-painted 77FP. He must have also had the 'step' removed from the neck pocket so he can use AANJ necks from the 7VWH and 555!

So it is possible, but I wouldn't recommend it!

Why sell it then just buy parts instead of a different guitar?

Personally I prefer the older joint, but how often do you really go that high on the neck?

Depends on if the neck joint is the only thing wrong. I know I wouldn't want to buy another full RG with all the pickups and other stuff I've blown money on in my current guitars, just to get AANJs.

But then, I don't have an issue with the old heel. I have a harder time reaching the 24th on my Schecter 7 string, which is set-through.

Re: Original Heel to Contoured Heel

I can reach the 24th on my RG550 (old heel) but it's very hard and I don't feel comfortable at all so I can not make any vibration. I think my hand is small then

I'm with you. I rarely play at the very top of the neck so I don't mind my guitars with Tilt joints at all. The AANJ feels good, I have an RG7421 with this joint, but I certainly wouldn't modify an older body if it didn't have it.
