Rate these tones from brightest to darkest?

Hey guys,

I need some help in qualifying the expected tone of these three guitars. All 3 have virtually identical maple necks with rosewood/ebony fingerboards and all three have Floyd Rose trems.

1.) Mahogany S series guitar - direct mount H-S-H pups

2.) Alder body with maple cap RG series guitar - direct mount H-H pups

3.) Basswood with pickguard mounted H-S-H pups

My gut feel is that the alder w/maple should be the brightest. Next the basswood and then the mahogany, but since the S series is so thin, I am wondering if that still holds true, and if not... is the basswood actually the "darkest" of these three and is the S series the middle of the road or is it brighter than the alder one?

Thanks for any opinions,
Jeff

Thanks a bunch, Eddie! So the thin-cut of the S series really doesn't tone down the "darkness" of the mahogany to that of a basswood, huh? Glad to hear it from someone "in the know".

I totally appreciate it, bud.

Based on your feedback, I now think I know what pickups I plan on installing in which guitar, but since this isn't the pickups forum, I'm wondering if I should just PM you my ideas, or is it copasetic to talk about it here?

Regs,
Jeff

I think it's better to talk about it here on the forum (possibly the pup area). You'll get a lot more feedback/opinions here instead of just mine.

Fair enough... to be continued in the PUPS and Wiring Forum.

Then again, I've gotten a whopping ONE response over on the PUPS forum. Maybe I should have just stayed here and at least got a reply from you, Eddie?

Oh well... time to hit some other sites for opinions just in case I am missing some possible tonal disaster with my choices.

Thanks,
Jeff
