Re-painting!

Hey guys, Im getting a new axe of evilbay and I dont really like the colour, so I think I might sand her back and leave it natural but I was wondering if theres anything I should know before atemping to do this, any do's and any dont's? Its a bass wood body if that means anything. I will post pics if I decide to go ahead!

Re: Re-painting!

Basswood doesn't have very noticeable grain, and the wood is pale, almost white in color. I just sanded down an RG a few weeks ago. It can be done still, if you want, but it's less "the norm" for staining as say mahogany.

What color is the guitar right now? Is the paint in good shape?

Re: Re-painting!

This is what sanded basswood looks like. The upper body contour also has a veneer or something over it, which doesn't match the rest. The surface also looks a little dark, from the sanding dust getting in the grain (original color was black).

Warmoth's page has this to say about basswood:

"This is a lighter weight wood normally producing Strat® bodies under 4 lbs. The color is white, but often has nasty green mineral streaks in it. This is a closed-grain wood, but it can absorb a lot of finish. This is not a good wood for clear finishes since there is little figure. It is quite soft, and does not take abuse well. Sound-wise, Basswood has a nice, growley, warm tone with good mids. A favorite tone wood for shredders in the 80s since its defined sound cuts through a mix well."

Re: Re-painting!

if it has green blemishes could stain it for a darker wood colour, then clear coat it?
