RG220

ok so last year i picked up an rg 220 from this friend of mine who needed money. got it for 100 bucks with an emg 81 (gone almost immediately)
right now the body is being painted and aside from needing fretworkt he neck is in good shape. the only concern i have is that the floating trem that came with it is a piece of crap. it doesnt stay in tune and its not very stable. i'm wondering if i could either find some way to make it not float anymore if theres some kind of part for that, or if theres a different trem i could swap it out for htat would be more stable. i would really prefer the guitar to not float as i'm going to play music that doesnt require the whammy at all. any suggestions at all are more than welcome.

Is that the trem which looks like a double-locking type but isn't?

Looks like it'd swap with an original Floyd Rose. I'm thinking of getting one of those little beaters as a project guitar to mangle.

There is no "part" you can get to block the trem.
You can improvise by getting the Hipshot Tremsetter but that costs money and if you rather have a blocked trem - then just get a few bits of wood and imobilise the trem block by sticking a piece between it and the back of the cavity.
Make it a snug fit and then just unscrew the claw springholder a couple of turns.
To make it even more stable you can completely remove the springs and the claw holder and stick a plank of wood there as well - also making it a snug fit to block the trem block on one end and fit where the screws for the clawholder were on the other.

thats the one.. single locking piece of ****. would the original floyd fit that w/out modification ? b/c its being painted already and i dont want to screw up the finish by routing the cavity bigger.

i think i see what you're saying, i'll probably try that when i set it all back up once its finished.

Im pretty sure you can drop a TRS101 in there... But those aren't exactly high end. That's the trem that the '02 2xx's used. http://portweb.webmonde.net/scripts/...l?quickfind=SB 0255-010&catalog=allparts&template=preview

Or you could try to fit a TRS in it... I'm not sure how well that would work. But if you're going to try the TRS, just try to fit a Schaller Floyd into the cavity. The fine tuners are shorter (So it will fit in a smaller cavity) but whether or not it will fit is questionable... You need to measure those posts and stuff.

the schaller doesnt fit quite right. The original floyd is extremely roomy though in that cavity, although it looks a little weird, its a direct replacement for that model. GOt pics if you wanna see sometime

i would actually like to see that because if i can find a replacement trem that stays in tune and is made of better stuff i would definately look into buying it. think of it this way, i spent 100 onthe guitar and the paintjob is free (cousins doing it) so if i have to spend money on hardware and electronics, i end up with a better guitar for still a decent price right?

so bring on the pics geneticfreak03@aol.com

thx,
brian

Wow really? The OFR's have a much longer rear section with the fine tuners in it... I decided to NOT put the Schaller in my RG470 because, although it will fit, the fine tuners are too short, far too small for the TRS rout. But those TRS101 routs always struck me as being pretty small so wasn't sure if they'd fit. That's cool, almost makes me want to go by an RG200 and go plop some OFR's in em!

From the project guitar forums!

Seems like the Schaller has smaller fine tuners, but a larger actual plate area... but either way, both are quality.Just do measurements and see what will fit. But you will need to install new posts...

I hope SV300 chimes in, he's done this before! But Im also planning to put some sort of good FR in my RG470 (OFR? FR Pro? Edge?!?!?!) and from what knowledge I've obtained in my research (most from SV300!) you'll need to switch the posts. And unfortunately that probably entails drilling out the holes a bit bigger and probably deeper as well. Preferably with a drillpress!

As to getting the old bushings out you'll likely be pretty successful just getting some pliers and tugging at them til they pop. But if it really doesnt give then it might be glued in. In that case put a soldering iron in it to warm up and loosen the glue, and then remove, screw the stud back in, and go at it again with the pliers. But chances are it wont be glued at all. Be sure you measure out your cavity and post spacing though!

Also, you can just use the drill press and just drill out the old studs if you wish.
