RG421 Revisited

Hey guys

there were a few threads floating around before about the RG421, and against my better judgement, you guys talked me into getting one

well anyways, after an agonizing 2 week wait I just picked her up today. shes royal blue, and has a fixed bridge, and white neck binding, but all in all just like any other RG. so there are a bunch being moved out mad cheap because theyre discontinued so i thought i would post my thoughts and first impressions to maybe encourage a few of you hesitant peeps to get one cheap while you can!

out of the box....
I wasnt quite sure what to think. had a decent action for a fixed bridge, and once i tuned down to D, with the stock setup, it was PERFECT. no buzz, no rattles, no adjustments needed. sweet. the royal blue finish is absoloutely amazing, and looks wise, is now my favorite guitar in the pack. the only thing that bugged the hell out of me was the white neck binding. i just dont do binding lol

when i got home....
I jammed around first with my 570, for comparison purposes. I still love the 570 with all my heart for playability. the fixed bridge on the 421 makes it naturally stiffer of an action. I played a few poorly placed chords, and its amazing how resonant the guitar is compared to the 570. it even feels rock solid, but a good rock solid. It has a very alive feel and ring to it. the neck binding actually doesnt bother me when I play, which kinda suprises me.

plugged in....
OMFG. I noticed the bridge pickup set really high compared to my 570, so i almost adjusted it right away. the RG570 turns to mud with the pickups that high. but i, feeling lazy, decided not to......thank god. I turned my peavey classic 50 off stand by, and dear good god the beast almost blew me over with the first powerchord. I had just been playing my 570, which has the same pickups, and this thing must have been twice as loud. with the amp volume on 4, the 421 was overdriving the clean channel this isnt wholly amazing seeing as the bridge pickup was set so high, what amazed me was the fact that it wasnt muddy at all! it sounded amazingly full and gritty, but not muddy in the least. and the bottom end is staggering when paired with that fixed bridge. I have a whole new found respect for the v8 pickup.

overall....
overall, I have NOTHING bad to say about this guitar. even the neck binding, the more I think its atrocious as it stands out so bad, the more I think she would look GREAT with a white paf pro and my super distortion with white coil covers she has an amazing feel and playability to her, especially if you tune down. the out-of-the-box tone is almost as good if not a little better than my artist with gibson 57's, and that was my holy grail for a while. the 5 way switch is actually quite impressive, Its almost funny though how the 5 positions of the switch sound similar to my 570, which uses a different combination of functions, and switch position for switch position they sound close. not dead on, but close, using one less pickup. how cool is that

I decided to pay an extra 75 bucks (375 before tax) so i could play the guitar that i was to own, and im glad I did. if you can get one still for 299, DO IT!

what are you still doing here reading, go get one!

.....

you think im kidding!? GO! now!! buy one!!!

Congrats on the 421!

I noticed the same thing as you with the fixed bridge. Tone and sustain. Feels more solid. But that should be a given being compared to a floating bridge.

I'm glad you like it and maybe I ought to look into one.....ideas

299....e-mail me where (don't post it ;-) )

This is no average, dime-a-dozen axe, i'm tellin' ya. The 421 really has something special going. 299 is totally unreal... Especially after you play it!

FYI... anybody who's interested in these... they're now available on the market new for $279!

I finally gave into temptation today and order a 421RB. Can't wait till it gets here... then the fun of deciding what pickups to install will begin!

What do you mean you had to pay 75 extra bucks to play it? Can't you just play it in the store for free?

What he means is he bought it at a store for $75 more than he could have got it for online, and thus paid for the privilege of actually playing the guitar before buying it.

I played one once and like you said, the fixed bridge compared to a floating trem felt stiffer, it was hard to bend and stuff so that turned me off. Kind of like the RG7421 I have but I tune that down a half step to compensate.

right on the nose darren! thats exactly why I payed the extra.

and Xing, yes, it is stiffer playing n general, which I kind of like. not everyone likes having a tuned down guitar string flop all over the place

Must say i like the stiffer feel, also, both on the 421 and the even higher tension 7421XL. Don't get me wrong, i don't dislike the looser feel of a trem... nothing compares to my 520. But overall, my style is better suited to the stiffer hardtails. I can sure see tho how it would feel a bit stiff if you play with a lighter touch.

Sweet! Today I just received my 421-RB from ********. This guitar is unbelievable, and for $279, a complete steal! I'm seriously tempted to buy another one at this price.

What I'm digging about it so far:
1) The finish: I figured royal blue would be a standard clearcoat finish, but it's actually got a light sparkle to it. Just enought to be flashy but not enough to be obnoxious. Very cool!

2) The neck: I'm a sucker for anything with a bound fretboard. Plus, I like the wizard 2 profile... it's got a little more meat to it. Kinda reminds me of an Ultra or Viper neck.

3) Surprisingly... the pickups: I'd never played a guitar with V7/V8 pickups that I liked the tone of until today. I always thought the V7/V8 combination lacked clarity and was a little too weak in the output department. For some reason (probably the strung-thru bridge), the pickups really come alive in this guitar. Output levels are good, clarity is decent. I'm still planning on replacing the pickups with a PAF Pro/FRED (because I've already got them on order), but I spent a lot of time playing the 421 today and couldn't complain about the tone.

All in all, Buy this guitar! Ask for one as a Christmas gift. It's way too much guitar for $279!
