RG570 Neck Split, Help!

Ok, so theres a V shaped split forming on my RG570. Its like the bolts that hold the locknuts in place are the top of the V, and it comes together about an inch and a half below those bolts. Its real light so far, and it wasn't there 2 days ago. I can just barely feel it when I run my fingers over it.

WTF do I do? This has been my main guitar for about 10 years.... I really don't want to hang her up...

Behold, my MSPaint illustration of the issue...

Thanks for the help!

I'll be thanking him with $$ when I buy a Jem from him in a few months ~

I'm not sure that repair guide will help me much tho, as the crack is miniscule at this point. I was kinda wigging out when I posted earlier, sry about that. Still, i wonder if theres something that can be done at this stage to stop it from cracking further..

Check too see if your nut is insanely tight. If it is, loosen it up a bit. That will probably prevent further cracking.

Re: RG570 Neck Split, Help!

super glue, razor blade, masking tape, wet-dry sandpaper, a power drill, and a buffing wheel drill bit

Put one drop at a time of the glue into/onto the crack and let each dry totally before adding another. Build this up over several applications into a mound that is higher than the rest of the finish.

Get a single edge razor blade and wrap each end with masking tape--say, three layers of tape over the sharp edge). Leave enough space in the middle of the blade to allow the glue mound to fit between the taped ends.

Slowly scrape the open edge of the blade over the mound to flatten it. The tape will keep the blade off of the rest of the finish. When you can't scrape any more, take off a layer of tape and go to it again.

When you are down to the last layer of tape put the blade aside and sand the area with the wet-dry sandpaper (wet the paper--spit, water, whatever).

Buff the sanded area with your power drill and little buffing wheel.

When you get out of rehab?

I still prefer wood glue, Frank always preferred super glue.

As a master carpenter, I can tell you in no uncertain terms that wood glue (Elmers is best, of course) is the best option by far. Super glue gets brittle with time and would likely crack again after a few months with one good jolt. Wood glue actually soaks into the cell structure of the wood and very much becomes PART of the wood, to put it in a nutshell. And you're right. That neck will never break on a well-glued joint. Hell, how do you think they make their 3-piece necks in the first place? You guessed it.

And if glueing a crack sounds iffy to you, you can always carefully drill through (not ALL the way through, of course) the cracked portion WITH A DRILL PRESS and put a couple of quarter inch oak dowel pins in it, liberally glued into place. It can then be sanded flat. Mind you, it would be a dead giveaway of a repair job, but if it makes you sleep easier... Personally, I'd do it exactly as Rich laid out.

I use Elmers for everything but cracks. It's a thicker consistency than Titebond and not as easy to work deep down into a crack. In the end the brand doesn't really matter, but I definately prefer wood glue for porous material

Re: RG570 Neck Split, Help!

Just another vote for WOOD glue, Besides the ease of use, It's also less typicle to make a mistake with it, Trust me, Having a 7620 neck stuck to ones hand whilst trying to seperate skin from said neck with a razor blade isn't much fun.

Rob

p.s. In no way am i associated with said Superglue retard

Re: RG570 Neck Split, Help!

Is it really as bad as you drew onto that pic or is it very light?

My 550 has had a similar crack for years now and I've not bothered to do anything to it since I'm having zero problems. It seems when the two met they stopped progressing, and it seems more a surface crack than anything major, so until I actually have a problem with it I'll let well enough alone.

I've thought 100 times about pressing some glue into it, but I've not bothered, again, no brokie no fixie. :-)

Of course It's not been hit or knocked hard since the throwing at the girlfriend incident . . . that's what caused the crack in the first place . . . so I'm not positive it WON'T get worse one day . . . (I actually didn't throw it at her, I just threw it because she pissed me off)
