RG760 - Help me out...

Hi all,

This is my first post at this forum.

I'm in the middle of a deal to get an RG760. It's about 10 years old. What is the going price for this guitar?

Would appreciate your kind advice before I make any stupid mistakes.

Thanks!
Al

Well, any RG7xx shouldn't go more than $400 in excellent condition with a case. I scored on a RG760DG (Dark Gray) more than a year ago in great condition with a couple nicks at a ridiculous price. It didn't come with a case and had to purchase replacement parts. I managed to upgrade the bridge and neck for free as well. I think the earlier verions of the 760's originally had gray pickups. Mine came in black but was apparantly from the same year they came stock with gray pickups?? (according to the catalog scans i've seen...)... no biggie though...
As for the neck, these necks (original Wizards) are what Ibanez are known for... slim, thin, and fast! They're technically the same necks found on most 7xx and 5xx guitars of the era (late 80's/early 90's). If you don't mind the 'sharp' sharkfin inlays, it's also a plus for you.
Otherwise, i doubt it'll be a mistake getting an 7xx guitar as long you paid for what its worth and condition.

$400 is fair if it's in EX+ condition or better.. To me that means no chips in the paint and minimal fret, and/or hardware, wear.. Price goes down with condition.

For example, I grabbed a 1989 RG760 in Jewel Blue off EvilBay last month.

$300 seemed like a steal at the time, but then I found out that '4 dings around the edge-none through to the wood' meant 'dinged to the wood sealer in 8 places'. In it's condition, the price was fair, IMO.

Of course, this all depends on how much you want the guitar. I would pay more for a white RG750, in similar condition, just because I want one..

That guitar had black pickups, btw, even though the 1989 cat. shows grey. I'm thinking late 89-early 90 7xxs had the black, or maybe it just depended on the finish. My 1988 RG750 had the grey though. Confusing would be an understatement.

Thanks guys! I have a better idea how to size up the pricing now.

As I've never used a Floyd-Rose equipped guitar before, is there any particular things I should be looking at when inspecting the condition of the Floyd Rose trem? What are the severe/critical probable defects in a 10 year old Floyd Rose trem?

Thanks again!!!

You can study the tech section found on this site and understand how to fix and tune up the guitar before you actually get it. Obvious condition for Edge/Lo-Pro Edge depends on rust, dimples, and if all parts are complete. I'm sure there's a whole lot more to it but you'll have to take the guitar apart to truly find out.
