RG770 or RG Series RG770 Confused???

I have seen a couple of folks selling RG770's on the forums, but at closer look it says RG Series on the headstock. I thought the RG Series guitars were the "economy" models. And yet I have seen, on several forums, people refer to them as authentic RG770s.

They don't have shark inlays or binding. I am confused, can someone clear this up for me?

Thanks,

Pete

I think you are confusing RG Series with GRG. The economy Ibanez brand is called GIO, so you have the GRG and GSA for instance, which are budget models of the RG Series and the S Series.

That said, RG = RG Series.

Not all 770's have Sharktooth inlays for a start. I know because I have one. The Japanese market only models that were released in 2001/2002 like the one I have for sale here on Jemsite have offset dot fretmarkers. RG Series guitars include a broad spectrum of models, lower end ones and higher end models like the 770's. The range includes Japanese, Korean and Indonesian made guitars and can differ a good bit in price/quality.

"RG Series" became a headstock standard for RG guitars in '94.

So what are the main differences between the pre 1994 RG550s and RG770s versus the post 1994 ones?

This.

And they changed the neck to a Wizard with a bubinga stripe at some point down the line too.

Re: RG770 or RG Series RG770 Confused???

Were they still made in Japan? How does the quality compare. I gotta say I prefer the pre 94 necks, either maple or rosewood, however, I don't mind the wizard necks either.

What about pickups and trem? The trem on the post 94 is a lo pro, correct?

Thanks,

Pete

The Pre-94 necks are the original wizard necks! It's the profile, not the neck joint that the name refers to.

The trems post 94 varied by year. Your best bet is to simply pour over the catalogue scans available on Ibanez's website and take each year and model as you find it.
