Hi,
I have a purple S470 which I used to love. However, I think I've been spoiled by just how gorgeous my new JEM7V is! That and my Fender Strat, of course - different type of guitar but still wonderful.
Firstly, I am struggling with the
action on the S470 and have posted elsewhere about this. To get it to typical Ibanez levels (like the JEM and my old RG) brings in
fret buzz or tone choking. I'm not skilled enough to start adjusting the frets or truss rod, so can get it done by a tech. There is a VERY good pro tech near by who will do a full setup job for £80. That includes servicing all the electrics too, the works basically.
Of course, I'm aware the guitar itself is probably only worth about £150 - £200 now.
Secondly, the pickups sound too heavy on the low-end / muddy. Again, in comparison to the JEM7V and even my entry-level RG, which is surprising to me.
So, is it really worth the setup job when the sound isn't quite right? I could throw some new pick-ups into it, of course (again, I'd have to get the tech to do this...) but would I be better off selling the guitar and looking at a modern-day S or another RG?
What are the modern day S guitars like in comparison to the S470?
