Question

Scalloped fretboard owners here?

Hello from Finland!

I was wondering if here are others ibanez owners who have made scallopings to the fretboard?

I did mine two years ago for my S 370, scalloped the whole board with very deep scallopings. It took me long time to get used to it, but now i don't wanna play guitar without scallopings anymore

Here are some pics

I'm about to buy an used Ibanez RG and do scallopings for it. That way i could have guitars with both tunings as i keep the other in Eb

Greetings,
Mikko

I've always wanted to try a guitar with a scalloped fretboard, But I am too scared to do anything work like that to my guitar. I have a JEM copy lying around in bits...I might try it on that.

Looks like it needs some oil on that fretboard!

Re: Scalloped fretboard owners here?

Yeah oil would make it look nicer definetely, but as once happened, a luthier oiled one neck for my guitar and it became way too slick for my taste. So I better keep this neck without it

BTW. I've heard refretting is almost impossible to do for scalloped fretboard. Is that true?

But i'm sure Yngwie Malmsteen has refretted some of his guitars successfully
My frets have been drained quite a bit, so i might need to do it quite soon

I hand scalloped a Super Wizard, it's on an old RG470.
I have a hand scalloped Strat.
scalloped the last 4 frets on my RG1570 and GRG170DX.

I love the scalloping. I've been doing it for about 15yrs.

Re: Scalloped fretboard owners here?

There's not much point, but i've tested the feel is different when scallopings are deep as hell

It only matters when you bend the high E string as your finger will sink to the concave and you get perfect control

But when i get the RG, i don't think i'll go that deep

Cool! scalloped necks! Now just make sure you don't develop Yngwie's ANNOYING UNMUSICAL ****ING DISGUSTING VIBRATO

Re: Scalloped fretboard owners here?

I guess I'll join the party! Here's a Super Wizard neck I'm working on for a frankenRG I'm building.

Prepping for the scalloping:

Scalloping completed, sanded, and freshly oiled (still need to dress the fretbars):

Admittedly not a professional job, but it'll do - the carpet in the second picture sort of makes it look like the far end is unevenly finished, but it is.

Re: Scalloped fretboard owners here?

yeah well i scalloped the last 7 frets on my strat, you did some hugely deep scallops!!!!, and you shuda varnished them, your board looks pretty dry and all that, the varnish/lacquer protects its in every way shape and form
lacquer is what you should be using however, forget my rambling on varnish
