Stripping RG
Hello all,
Some of you may remember my thread from a few months back regarding how my girlfriend's cat peed the case of my '92 RG570. I've since ordered a new guitar (Carvin) and now have this RG laying around as a (smelly) project guitar.
I've decided to
strip
it using a
heat gun
and was curious if any of you have any experience with this. I've read the tutorial on projectguitar.com and want to know if any of you guys have any pointers. I'm also planning on stripping the headstock as well.
I'll likely go with a "Neville" kind of look with this guitar when all is said and done if any of you are curious.
Thanks,
Danny

Re: Stripping RG
Go ahead, but be careful, the heat gun doesnt look like it does much, but if you stay a lil over enough in one spot youll end up with a nice black blotch...
I sanded a body and then used a heat gun to "stain / burn" it... it came out nice and gave me nice control over the burning factor...
Palm sander is a must, and helps tremendously, dont even think about doing jack sh*t by hand...
Never fully stripped anything by burning tho... :P

Are we talking the burning like on a Root Beer Jem? I can't find one and might end up making on from scratch. Always wondered if they torched the body before staining, or what.

Palm sander + LOTS of time + LOTS of work.
I think the sander gives better results even if its a bigger pain in the ass. Plus, try not to burn yourself with the heat gun.
Good luck!

I would be stripping that damn cat's head off. I hate cats! We went on a weekend vacation and when we got back, we found the cat had pissed all over the couches. That's the last time the cat did anything in the house. Then I shot it with a pellet gun. Dumb pecker cat.
BTW, good luck with your project.

Second that on the palm sander. Get yourself the roughest grit sandpaper they have and you'll take the finish and paint right off it in no time. Finish up with 220 then 400 by hand and you're done.

Exactly what i did... ill post pics when i get it back (its getting major neck work)... I did the whole thing around a set of pink paf pros i had lying around
Its a crappy body, thats what prompted me into doing it, i might have been afraid on a better piece of wood... but it was easy

i cant stand any violence against animals. if there is a problem with anymals in the house is it your fault that they were in there.i dont understand the agressive reaction from people to animals. its very sad and extremly stupid too.
please use your mind.

Re: Stripping RG
Just for the record - neither I, nor my girlfriend, harmed the cat in any way as a result of his misdeeds. I gave him a lot of dirty looks and didn't let him sit next to me on the couch for about a week, but there was no retribution whatsoever.

Re: Stripping RG
Sanding is the only way to go. If you want a shiny finish over paint or stain either one get some good automotive clear such as ppg or ici and watersand and buff after it's cured. I had this 550 stripped and painted by a local motorcyle/hot rod painter, airbrushing and blue and all. A solid color strip and base clear completely finished with matching headstock and new decal usually runs about $200 from him. *without spaces
