Super Distortion or Tone Zone???

will a super distortion overpower a humbucker from hell? if so would i be safer with a tone zone in the bridge? ive been told paul gilbert has used the TZ and HFH before so it safe to say it works great. also will the TZ have make a huge difference in output than inf pickups? will the SD make a bigger difference?

Dimarzio's Website has a cool way to choose the perfect pickup for your needs... try it out!

Nick, you need to post in the right section of the board mate. Look down a little and see the pickup section. PS: Welcome.

Tone Zone is probably the best.

Thumbs down

Re: Super Distortion or Tone Zone???

To me the Tone Zone is so inproperly named. It's a very mild pickup without much bite. The "tone" is just average and lifeless. The Super D destroys the Tone Zone in my opinion.

This is why pickup tone is so subjective. To me, the Super Distortion is just a mud machine to drive fuzz boxes into a frenzy, whereas the Tone Zone (which now resides in the bridge position of my BFP) is easily one of the best sounding high output humbuckers I have ever experienced. I don't know how it's output relates to an SD, but the TZ eats the original PAF Pros for breakfast - so Greg is right for Greg's needs, and I am right for mine.

Oddly I paired the TZ with an Air Norton for the neck position (one of the most popular combos), and have been singularly disappointed by the Air Norton - a very bland and generic sounding neck pickup to me.

You can pick up Dimarzios from various FleaBay retailers stupid cheap, and resell them here for a reasonable amount, so why not experiment and see what you get out of each one?

Cheers

David

Re: Super Distortion or Tone Zone???

tone zone is a good pickup, but not enough output for metal.. which is the kind of pickup i would like now. I want to try a super distortion but i also want to see what the duncan distortion and duncan full shred sound like first. or dimarzio deactivator, those sound interesting
