Re: Swirling Adventure - Details as I discover them
Awesome! Looks like you have great coverage, and vibrant colors. A lot going on, but that's just the technique of swirling. Looks like you got the imporant part down!
Do you know if the Auto paints you are using are considered Single stage? In other words, can you paint a car with them and be donw with it? Or are they base coats requiring a clear coat?
I've got access to HOK, PPG, Planet Color, and others...I have heard to possibly use single stage? Also, are you reducing them with a slow reducer, or just a medium? Or not at all?
My HOK attemtps have been poor. I tried black and Fourescent Green. I didn't try very long because htey skinned over so quick. I'm guessing it was reduced too much, and I was using medium reducer.

These are what I am PLAYING with...
Regular Colors
http://www.coastairbrush.com/products.asp?cat=157
Fluourescent Colors
http://www.coastairbrush.com/products.asp?cat=159
You can get them at Menards or Home Depot as well. Rustoleum makes a small can of Oil Based Enamels in Red, Blue, Green, Yellow, Gray, Black, and White. I gave these a try once, but didn't carry on with them ONLY because of the limited colors. I assumed poeple must be using something else since they are using Flourescents and Rusoleum doesn't have those. Not in a can anyway - they do in spray.

Thanks man I appreciate it. I haven't really tried, but I thought I would ask cuz I was assuming there were some legalities about selling paint online, selling to the sniffers.

Re: Swirling Adventure - Details as I discover them
That happened when I put just the black in. The other colors were added after I added borax, and the black spread to the middle. I imagine all my colors would have done that without borax. Guess everyone's water is different too...just one more fun variable to this whole equation!

Re: Swirling Adventure - Details as I discover them
Emptied my water this morning...with the plan if filling it tonight and doing some more testing. Well, the 55g brute I am using is designed to have wheels on it. I forgot to bring them home to allow me to wheel that heavy sucker around. So I didn't fill it. Going to stop by the office tomorrow to grab them, fill it, let it sit for a few hours with the borax, and then try some more.
Any suggestions on how much borax for about 45g of water? I've been doing 20oz. Can you have TOO MUCH borax?

try testing in a 5 gal bucket is what i did so you can multiply time 10 for the 50 when you get it right with minimum trouble and use less paint to compensate for the small surface area of the 5 gallon bucket.

oh yeah. make sure your test peices are sprayed white. even a seasoned pros swirls look like crapp on a plain piece of wood. and use teaspoons to figure out the borax amount in the 5 gallon then use a convertor to see how many cups when you multiply for the larger tank. your really close .and try different orders in adding the paints after you get them all to spread nice on their own.

The ones I am using are standard Dupont auto paint, and they DO need to be cleared. Results are pretty decent do far though.

Many colors are fairly transparent and really "pop" when sprayed over white, but I'd say that your base color would be highly dependent on what your final
swirl
colors would be. For example, I've seen a lot of poor GMC attempts in auctions where the green looks very faded, which I took as the white basecoat showing through. I would think that for that particular combination, painting the guitar white, then green, then swirling would produce the best results.

Re: Swirling Adventure - Details as I discover them
Good to know about the borax. Maybe I need to back off a little? I like the idea of trying in the 5g bucket first, then multiplying.
I do paint my 2x8's white first. And I agree about tinting your primed color depending on your project. Just like painting anything. If my end result is to be Fluorescent green, start with white, next coat add some green, next coat a little more green, then my final color. So on those 2 color swirls with black and a color, you would be best to tint your prime coat with the color you plan to use. It will give you the brightest result.
I have heard of the Humbrol, and think thats what that guy in the YouTube uses for the Green MC that comes out looking nice. The dip in the blue container...as the cans look the same. I just have to mail order them, and I wanted to try it ASAP and not wait for them to arrive.
For the DuPont user - I assume it's not single stage then...so if you painted say a car with it, it doesn't dry glossy, you would need to clear it. Single stage you wouldn't need to clear it. If using single stage in a guitar for a swirl, you would obviously still clear it. It's just the type of paint I have been told a particulr someone MIGHT be using...
Putting the kids to bed shortly, wife is out for her sister bachelorette party, so I have the WHOLE night to get some results!!!! Keep an eye out. Maybe I will make it less complicated and go for a two color for now...and use the 5g idea for each color to figure them out.
