Re: Swirling Adventure - Details as I discover them

Well I think I took a step BACKWARDS so far...

Refilled my 55g drum to about 50 gallons
30oz of Borax - probably way to much

This attempts is mixing with 1 Shot 50/50 with Mineral Spirits
Only used 2 colors this time. I don't think I put enough black in as I was afraid I was putting too much in before. Didn't find the happy medium.

And Red...well it just doesn't want to spread at all, yet it look like it was too thin. Both colors do. Something went wrong here.

Here I went back and mixed it 1 part paint, 3 parts mineral spirits. WAY TOO THIN!!! I think anyway? What do you successfull swirlers say? To thin, too much borax, both?

Off to try some more.

Re: Swirling Adventure - Details as I discover them

So I wanted to try somethign with success, and knew Testors would pretty much do that...so to get my hopes back up, and move from the 1 Shot for a round, I used some!

Here are the resilts, straight from the bottle. And these are the old school testors. The cheap square type bottles. Not the model master. The white skimed pretty quick, the red dots are remains from the last dip that I didn;t feel like getting them all out...and then blue and green.

So why again do people say not to use testors?

Re: Swirling Adventure - Details as I discover them

More Testors cause this stuff seems to work! Sorry - my colors suck, but they are all I had. And it looks like the Red could have been thinner. The dark blue, light blue, and green - again, straight out of the bottle.

Why would these work so much easier than 1 Shot. I am beginning to think 1 Shot isn't going to work???

There was still a bit of paint in the water, and dipping something again removes it faster than a paper towel. Here was the result of that!

Might sign off for the night...maybe try one more back with the one shot...

Man, just look at this:

http://i15.photobucket.com/albums/a3...orter17757.jpg

Thats my attempt. You know what I did? Water in a bucket, then dripped in oil based paint. Rust-o-leum. $4 at lowes. Swirled it around a lot so thats not bunched together, then dipped it. Thats it! Thats all you gotta do for a good swirl job man. As for the base coat, primed it with gray, waited a day, wet sanded it with 400, then I spray painted it black, waited a day, wet sand with 400, then dipped.

Re: Swirling Adventure - Details as I discover them

looks nice. I have tried their paint...I have Blue, black, and white. I didn't have as good of resutls as you. I also didn;t want to get them to work great, as the color selection is not that great. There are not really any of the bright colors like the guys around here are using. Sure I can mix, but then I will never get the same results.

Prep work is no problem...I have painted guitars, motorcycles, helmets, etc...I'm fine with al lthat and clearing.

And this one...tried adding Pearl Purple to the mix. What a reaction that was! It spread BEAUTIFUL! Only it pushed all the other colors to the outside, and I had to bring them back in, and it got kinda messy.

Goodnight!

You finally got it!
What kind of paints do you use? Synthetic-based? And the thinner is also synthetic?

That's kind of what I'm missing too...

Re: Swirling Adventure - Details as I discover them

show us how the testors looks right b4 you swirl something in it.
also the green you used what color green just green or flourescent?
i get good results with oneshot but if those are not thinned would save me alot of time.

I'll take pictures of the water next time before dipping. Possibly tonight. If I get some more paints. I ordered several Humbrol Brand paints too see how they work also.

The paint was just "Green" but it came out really bright! Not even Flourescent.

How are you getting your one shot? And what are you thinning them with? Maybe what I am thinning them with is the problem. Iw ould prefer to use them as there is much more quanitity in a can than of the model paints.

For the question about synthetic...I don't know. All I know is they are Testor Model Paints. Oil based Enamel.

as far as oneshot i dont use borax and use oneshot reducer but still havn't perfected it.im going to get some testors i would stick to them those are good results just wait a little longer before you dip and they shouldnt run. you would be amazed at how little paint you need to swirl a whole guitar i let a screwdriver dip do the trick one dip for the first color and 3 dips of the second in three different spots.
