SZ520QM a Bit Bright???

So, I picked one of these up used, got a great deal, and the condition was better than I expected. I gutted the pickups and electronics, put in a Dimarzio Virtual PAF in the neck and a Duncan Custom Custom in the bridge. New 3 way switch, new volume and tone pots (500K) and then put a push/pull to split the neck pickup in the 3rd knob spot.

I really like some of the tones out of it, split humbucker actually sounds pretty Strat like. However, I'm finding the overall tone of the guitar pretty bright. I'm going to try 250K pots and see how much of a difference that makes, but.....

Am I alone in thinking this is a bright guitar?

Re: SZ520QM a Bit Bright???

Congrats. Nice color.

I never swapped the pups out of the one I had and didn't really find it "bright". Do you find the bridge pup or the neck pup more bright? I know you said "overall" but I'm thinking the SD pup would be the brighter of the two.

With 250k pots in it you will have a lower overall output which if you play multiple guitarsyou will have to adjust your amp settings when switching from guitar to guitar.

If I had kept mine, I would've gone with a JB/Jazz but I am a sucker for a PAF Pro in the neck on any guitar

They are nice guitars and are easily a great buy right now since they are discontinued. I only sold mine because I bought the SZ4020fm.

The Custom Custom is a very bright pickup, look at the EQ on the Duncan site. That's what it is designed for.

I have a CC in another guitar and can really tell the difference between the 2. The neck pickup is good. I like the split sound, and if I want to thicken up full HB I use the tone knob.

I love the guitar, but just wanted to know how others perceived its tone.
