Re: The S series guitar thread.

I'd love to own one. Sorry, no pics, I'll just admire those that get posted. However, the one I really want is the 540S-SH in Lipstick Red, as pictured below. I'm guessing this one is super rare.

I've got a Lipstick Red '92 540S...just one extra pups and so much less rare hehe. I've always disliked the S-series before I got my Saber last year, because I simply couldn't ignore a good quality 'cheap' guitar with this sort of HSS layout and stacked single coil pups.

as for blocking trems for string changes...haven't done that for years. For cleaning the fretboard I simply unhook the trem and strings I change one at the time, which I guess makes it easier to tune them up as well.

Re: The S series guitar thread.

I fondled a MIK saber today in a local guitar shop, and it didn't look or feel thin at all. I mean there was barely any "arching" done at all. So I guess I have to hunt for a used MIJ if I want that sleek and thin body style, right?

I think they can't really be compared compared at all.
Locking tuners don't solve the problem that strings might jump off the nut when the tension gets too low. They also don't stop strings from 'catching' in the nut.
They don't really solve the problems that locking nuts do.
Besides, generally locking tuners are used only with vintage-style tremolo's. Those can't really be compared with double-locking tremolo's anyway.

Having said that, depending on how heavy of a tremolo user you are, a vintage-style tremolo with locking tuners can be 'good enough', and it gives a different tone, which some people might prefer. So both have their place, just depends on what you're looking for.
Personally I think the nut is more important than locking tuners, on a non-locking tremolo. I think a graphtech nut can do more for tuning stability (which I think is installed standard on an SV? It's black anyway). Also, on a Strat-headstock, I think staggered tuners are more important than locking or non-locking. When they're staggered, you can do away with the string trees, which is another cause of tuning problems on non-locking tremolo systems (although ofcourse that doesn't apply to guitars with an angled headstock, like the SV).

But in terms of reliablility and tuning stability, nothing beats a double-locking tremolo in my opinion.
