Weird Neck Heel on my S?

I was re-stringing and cleaning up my S the other night and I decided to take off the neck to see what markings were on it and the body. When I did I remembered this thread http://www.jemsite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=72180 and realized that my neck was not even close to the same style. Has anyone else seen an S neck like this?

BTW, the guitar is a 1990 540SCT6.

Looks like a square joint to AANJ conversion of some sort...In 1990 I don't think these were made with AANJ's.

Those were the first AANJs. From the factory like that, there's too much going on with the stamps and the extension to be a mod..

I would imagine this heel sounds a little better than the current aanj. I know PG prefer's the block heel for tone, I wonder if this is a good compromise for playablilty and tone? Do either of you have a newer S to compare with?

Re: Weird Neck Heel on my S?

Thanks for the info guys!

The pics of the Maxxas neck pretty much confirm the conclusion that I had come to after posting this last night. It looks like the 540SCT6 was one the first of the S series to get the AANJ and it's kind of like they tried to make a hybrid of the Maxxas and the S. The tuners, bridge, knobs, and neck construction are all the same as the Maxxas, but it's an S body.

Unfortunately it's a bit of bad news though, since the neck has a slight twist to it. The chances of me ever finding a replacement are pretty much nil. It's still playable, and the luthier I brought it to last week thinks they can get it set up so it still plays great.

This is my only guitar, so I don't have anything to compare it to. Not that my ears are discerning enough to tell the difference anyway!

The Vinnie Moore models have the same joint, too.

That is the same neck joint as used in higher level Yamaha Pacificas.
The only difference is that the Yamaha's neck uses a metal piece instead of being wood.

I'll try to shoot a photo in the next few days.
Meanwhile, have this one:

One was just on sale a few days ago at the auction site we dare not mention - I don't know if it sold, but with about 3 hours it was still sitting at $399 with no bids. BUT, here's the kicker. It wasn't the original pickguard and had a 3rd coil added to the middle, and worse than that, the trem had been changed out. One of the things I love about mine is the non-locking Edge II trem - in part because I just dig it, and in part because it's pretty rare. The cool thing about the one over on evilbay was that it was the splatter paint one, I'd love to have one of those.

Not to thread jack, but here's mine - I bought it from fellow Jemsiter Zoner a few years back:
