What gauge of 7 string set for a 6 string?

I have a rg550..with lo pro..
i wanna tighten my sound by putting uper 6 strings of a 7 string set..
So, which gauge 7 strings set should i use, so that tension with tuning in H would be aproximatly the same as with 9s in regular E tuning..?
..so i have less to fiddle with the setup..would the 10s 7 string set (which is available to me at the moment) be fine for this, or too thick maybe?maybe the 9s 7 string would be better..?
any experiences..?
Thannk you very much!

Re: What gauge of 7 string set for a 6 string?

You mean the six lower strings of a seven-string set?

Try Skull Strings. They´re designed to be detuned, and an acquaintance of mine says they´re good. I haven´t tried them, though.
However, if you´re tuning to B, I suggest you should go with gauges 13-17-26-36-46-60. I´d recommend GHS Boomers, or D´Addarios.

Yeah..i mean exactly that..so, the gauge you reccomand is actually 10s 7 string set, right..isnt it to thick...do you have any experience, or anyone else, since i am trying to get the 9s on regular tuning tension..
i am sure many of you guys were doing this..please give me some input..?
thanx

If you want to just tighten up the E, A, D strings, then use .009 - .046.

If you want to tighten everything up, then .010 - .046 set should be good enough. You will have to make a slight adjustment.

Personally, I like 10s a lot. You could go with 9s on the top 3 strings, but I HIGHLY recommend 36-46-60 on the bottom three.

Ernie Ball makes strings called "Not Even Slinky" that Petrucci uses when he tunes dow to C for songs like "As I Am". I'd check those as well.
