It sounds like Vai is on the middle/neck split combination, switching to the neck humbucker for the solo. The pickups in that guitar are Dimarzio Evolutions and a Jem single coil (only available in Jems, but similar to a Dimarzio Blue Velvet wired a certain way), and to my ears it sounds like he doesn't use the bridge pickup at all in that song.

Satriani uses the PAF Pro in the neck position, as did Vai in the late 80s before he started using the Universe seven string (with Blaze pickups) and designing the Evolution (the neck Evo is based on the neck Blaze).
Petrucci (and about 70 per cent of the members of the Jemsite forums, it seems) uses the Air Norton, so listen to his front pickup solo stuff from Awake onwards. It sounds to me like the PAF Pro has more pick attack.

If you wanna hear every pickup combination on a Jem with Evolutions (and with volume control variations and switching between pick, fingers and tapping), listen to "Rescue Me Or Bury Me" on Sex & Religion.

For PAF Pros, check out Skyscraper, the second David Lee Roth album Steve played on.

I believe there are a few sound demos on www.dimarzio.com as well, which include some Vai, Satriani and Paul Gilbert stuff.

From Awake onwards, though he also used a Universe seven-string for songs like Caught In A Web, The Mirror and Lie.

Check out the solos on Scenes From A Memory as well.

I remember you mentioning ... elsewhere, that the 570 was I believe in that lame copper color... that to me indicates that it's fairly new, and you've got the AANJ. The AANJ is a godsend when it comes to upper fret access on bolt-ons. I just LOVE it. While you will get better fret access with a neck thru guitar, it won't be a HUGE difference, and the JEMs aren't neck thru either.

The only neck thru RG you'll want to buy is going for the same megabucks that JEM's are going for anyway. The other one is a Korean guitar, and while it may be nice, it won't be as good as the 570, in my opinion.

All the modern RG's have recessed Floyds, meaning you can pull up, and Im sure you'll have as much travel as you could possibly need.

Also, just food for thought, the RG520's may be more desirable... They have mahogany bodies which some feel is a better tonewood, and you may like the mahogany better. Also the 520's are somewhat more rare than a 570, so I'm thinking they may actually slightly go up in value since they've discontinued them last year. Same as the 570, only with a mahogany body, and no middle single coil...
