Question

What is the bridge on the Rg 1550??

As I asked...what is the bridge on the RG1550? I was told it was a Edge Pro, but I have never heard of theis. Could they have meant an edge lo pro??

Thanks all..

There's no such thing as an Edge Lo Pro, its called the Lo Pro Edge. When was it made? If it was a pre-2003 model it should be a Lo Pro. Post 2003 models come with the Edge Pro.

Are the various Edge 's compatible with one another or is the routing different?

I think that they are compatible with one another. The routing work usually is done when you're replacing a TRS/Edge Pro II/Edge Pro III trem with a Lo Pro or Edge Pro.

I'm sure I read something somewhere that said lo-pro edges and edge pros are slightly different sizes, not sure if thats true or not or if they would even need routing work to swap.

It can't be a lo pro on the 1550. The edge pro was brought out in 2003; the same year the 1550 was introduced.

The 1550 has an edge pro trem.

Exactly. It's an edge pro. Look at Rich's old NAMM reports on his site if you want to see it yourself.

Re: What is the bridge on the Rg 1550??

People get confused because it is a low profile trem so naturally they think it's a a Lo Pro Edge when in fact as previously stated it IS an Edge Pro..

BTW, the 1550 is an incredible instrument. I have one along with an almost ifentical 97 550 in the same color. The 1550 is the better instrument and thats saying alot because we all know how good the 550 model is/was The 1550 actualy led me to sell my 7DBK..

Here is what i found whilst carrying out different conversions:-

I found the edge trem to drop into lo-pro routing with no problems, worked fine. However in reverse the edge routing required approx 5 - 6mm depth difference routed out to enable lo-pro to pull back and raise pitch of note by same amount of semitones as Edge trem. But lo-pro still dropped in with no other problems.
Swapping from TRS trem to either edge, edge pro or lo-pro requires a substantial amount of routing and possible refinish is needed but do-able.
I havent done a edgepro2 conversion. Looks very similar to TRS though.

Swapping from edge / lo-pro to TRS would be an insane move (sorry TRS users)

The conversion from Edge to edgepro or vice versa should pose no problems, as the routings are nearly identical.
Same again swapping from lopro to edgepro - OK though sometimes the string block route may need widening slightly
Edge pro to lopro requires extra 5-6mm depth to reach same pitches.

They all use pivot posts at 74mm centres and are all 95mm wide.

Some Edge Trems have a longer spring holder block (especially earlier models) than others and it catches on plastic cavity cover.
The block can be shortened and redrilled but be prepared for a nightmare it is made of extremely hard steel and will 'bomb' all your drill bits. You would be better to replace with shorter block.

Just check what trems you have got before you go cutting and routing (not advised to do unless you know what you are doing anyway), could end up being a costly job!!!

Hope this someone helps out!!

Have fun!
Paul

Re: What is the bridge on the Rg 1550??

Will not retrofit an old Edge/LoPro, as routing will be required, likewise you cannot put an Edge/LoPro on a 2003 model that ships with the EdgePro. Specifically, the front part of the bridge baseplate (pickup side of the studs) and the knife edge has a different radius, the back (near fine tuners) of the Edge Pro is longer and finally the inside area for the tremolo block needs to be totally routed for the EdgePro bridge.

Here is a snippet from Ibanez site.
As i said try em out first, i must have experienced different routings obviously !!!!

Some people have been lucky to do a direct swap without any routing.

Question

Re: What is the bridge on the Rg 1550??

Thanks for all the feedback guys!! I have an other question..

I just picked up a RG270 (dirt cheap). It has the bridge that is the non double locking but looks like a floyd rose. Is it possible to swap out the bridge for one of the many other ibanez ones without any extra routing?

Cory.
