S comes from "Sabre" (or "Saber" depending on where you're from I guess) but was changed to "S" after a legal action from Music Man who had already produced a guitar bearign the name.

RG has been said to stand for "Roadstar Guitar" as the RG pretty much replaced that series of instruments. It has also been advertised inthe british press as "Rock Guitar" without implicitly stating that that is what RG stands for.

A sabre is a type of sword... I guess it sort of matches the guitar.
