What's a good les paul copy?

I'm kinda looking for a les paul copy for a couple hundred bucks. I'm not overly keen on a epiphone unless you guys can refer a nice one. I had a lower model a few years ago and sold it in favor of a $99 dean that played better but i didn't keep that long either. I already have plenty of jems, rgs and such and thought it would be nice to get a decent les paul again.
I have heard great things about agiles such as the 2500-3000 series and they look mighty nice for the price. I've also heard good thigns about Tokais and their love rock series but they are kinda towards the top if not out of what I want to pay. What about a old ibanez copy like a pf200 or similar? I see them going for a couple hundred often and they look like they are made very well. I don't need anything amazing, just something as nice as possible for up to about $400-450 for when I want some solid hard rock tone and playing.

Used Epiphones on the upper end of the line are not that bad (much better than the cheaper Gibsons!!!!).

Look for a Dean though...

Ibanez artists are nice. They aren't exactly shaped like a les paul but the construction and materials they're built with are pretty much the same

Re: What's a good les paul copy?

wow those michael kelly's look awesome and I've already read nothing put praise from them from several places. I think i've already ruled out the dean due to the lack of the extra knobs, I want the 2 volume 2 tone set up for this one. I've already picked up a '78 ibanez pf200 and the more I look at that michael kelly the more I might have to try one of them too.

We were just talking about Tokai guitars in a different thread, they seem to have some nice Gibson copies .

Re: What's a good les paul copy?

Dillion makes a nice LP copy too. Most of those copies from Michael Kelly, Epiphone, Agile, Tokai and even the new Korean Ibanez Artists are made in the same plant in Korea. I'd base it on features price and appearance. The Agiles have some really nice choices of features and options available. In my experience, the Korean guitars are well crafted, but they need a pro fret dress to be on par with the nicer MIJ guitars. You can always swap out pickups the get the tone you want. The old PFs MCs and CNs are all are really nice. In the same league as the Artists. Some PFs do have a hollow air space under the top, which may actually improve the tone, if you're into that chambered sound.

Another thought: how about an Ibanez SZ model? It doesn't look like a LP, but it's the same kind of animal. If you want a great "improved" LP tone - more clarity and sustain, less mud, more harmonic overtones etc.

Keep an eye out for the old Aria Pro II Les Paul copies from the late 70s. Set neck construction it's very nice.
