Don't 550s have pickguards, whereas 570s do not?

Right,
There are several differences, the most obvious of which is the fingerboard. Maple on the 770DX and rosewood on the 570DX. The 770 also came with the ld fender style neck joint and the 570DX I believe had an AANJ. We in Europe also got the 670DX which was basically a hybrid of the two.
The 770DX has a clear scratchplate like on the multicolour JEMs I don't think the 570DX has one, I'm not sure if it has
direct mounted pickups
or not though or whether they're in mounting rings like a regular 570.
The 770DX has it's inlays and pickups and knobs and switch tip matched to the body colour the 570DX has regular
black pickups
and I believe metal knobs.
The 770DX also had the IBZ USA pickups whereas the 570DX came with V series pickups if I recall correctly.

I've never seen an RG770DX with a
rosewood fingerboard
and without a pickguard. Are you sure you've not been misinformed as to the guitars designation?
The regular RG770 has a rosewood fingerboard and no pickguard, I'm fairly sure that all RG770DX guitars have had the maple board and clear pickguard. There doesn't seem to be an RG770DX in any of the catalogues with a
rosewood board
.

Well let me put it like this. If the regular 770 has rosewood and no guard why not the 770 deluxe? Ive got a picture of one with the works, only difference is it has
direct mount pickups
.

The 770DX will have a clear pickguard, bound
maple fingerboard
, and body matched sharktoof inlays, pickups, and knobs.
IIRC correctly, we didn't have an RG570DX here in the States. We had an RG750 - Bound rosewood fingerboard,
black pickguard
and pickups. We had the RG550DX - with color matched mirror pickguard, and body matched fretmarkers.
I know, it seems backwards, but that's the way Ibanez decided to do it back in the early nineties. LOL

Well I've got an RG770DX sitting in the next room. It has a maple board, direct
mounted pickups
and a clear scratchplate like all the other RG770DXs I've ever seen, like all the RG770DXs that are in the catalogues...
The regular RG770 had direct mounted pickups in 92.
HERE
is a scan from Rich's site with the first catalogue appearence of the RG770DX next to a regular RG770.
HERE
is the page from the catalogue where it states that, and
HERE
is a picture of an RG770 with direct mounted pickups.
I'll let someone else track down the years for the RG570DX as it's just about midnight here and I'm off to bed.

The 770 with direct
mount pickups
in the link you just gave me is the one Im referring to. It has NO pickguard, even in the pics you provided. Ive always been under the assumption that the binding and inlays made it the deluxe model, hence the designation dx. Correct me if IM wrong, but itst the same way on teh 270 series and 570 series as well

I have a 550 DX with a blue mirror pickguard, blue-ish body and a matching headstock. There is no binding and it has black dots on the
maple fretboard
. I've seen a pic of this exact guitar on the net before so I know mine is not a frankenstein.

I also have a blue 550dlx with maple fretboard. There was also a 550ltd with color changing purple paint, purple mirrored guard and a bound rosewood board with
sharktooth inlays
.Both also had lo-pros.I think they were made from 91 to 93 or 94.

Dude you're blind. LOL All 770DXes have a clear pickguard.
RG770s have no pickguard, bound
rosewood boards
, and sharktoof inlays. The RG770DX has all the cool color matching, bound maple board, and color matched sharktoof inlays. Notice the model numbers by the pictures of the actual guitars? The 770s with color matching end with "DX."
You're making the mistake of applying Ibanez's *current* model designations (binding and sharkteef) to the older models.

Yup. That's the guitar I was referring to in my earlier post. Cool guitars aren't they?
