When was my bass made?

I heard you can tell when you bass was made by the code on it, I have an Ibanez EDC700 which says 01 at the begining so I'm assuming it was made in 2001 as that's when I bought it. I just bought a second hand Ibanez Roadstar II and the code is I863689 (oh bollocks I just put i small scratch on it while looking at the code, it caught on a tile, ****) does that mean it was made in 1986 or 1989, I know it's an 80's model.

Actually I think it's 1988. From what I understand after 1986 the first number indicated the actual year, they didnt include the decade. My old RG for instance says 704448 and from the research I made it's an 87 model. Not sure what the rest of those numbers mean though, it may be production run numbers or dating numbers and stuff as well, I have no clue.

That's what the bloke told me that I bought it off of, he said it was an 88 but i wasn't sure because of the number on it. Cheers mate.
