Which RG Ibanez to buy?

Should I buy an Ibanez RG 770 DX or an RG 550 DY? Thanks.

I don't like the color much, and don't even care it is signed by Steve Vai. How much better is it than the 770? I definately like the 770 more cosmetically.

The 770 is/was the top of the line RG back "in the day". The 550/560/570's are everywhere. Why get the Camaro when you can get the Corvette?

I had both, at one time. Hated the 770. Loved, and now miss, the 550. Could give a @#$* less if it WAS signed my Steve Vai, as I would play the HELL out of it. I wish I could afford that DY 550, right now. I'd scoop it up, most definitely.

What was wrong with the 770? By the way I am the top bidder now on the 550. I am wondering what condition the picukps are in and if any frets are going out. It was made in '87, and I am kindof reluctant to buy a guitar almost 20 years old. Any thoughts?

There is also an Ibanez 760 SLT in near perfect condition on EvilBay

Well imo $400+ for an 80's RG with a cracked neck is nuts, but I guess some folks got to have DY.

I bought a dead mint 91 570 of 3bay for $200 shipped, so better deals are there if you are patient.

sorry, have to go with the 770. i have owned 4 different 550's alongside my 770. the 770 killed them all. so much in fact that i have sold all of my 550's and retain only the 770. i love it so much that it is the only non-aanj rg that i own.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I guess the 770 is better, but a nice one is way over my budget. Maybe I could find one that plays the same, just a little dinged up and take it to a shop.

Aw, man, the one I had wouldn't stay in tune to save my life, and the pickups howled like crazy. If I had it, today, or at least knew then what I know now, I'd probably get it surring smoothly, but it was a nightmare, back then, and I gave up, and unloaded it. Now the 550 I had was the polar opposite: Would NOT go out of tune, no matter WHAT I did, and played like a friggin dream. Sold it, because it had become a bone of contention with my girlfriend, at the time (now my wife), because, well, hehe, it was bought FOR me by another girl. So to put this into perspective: A FREE Ibanez RG550.............I'd have to say that was the best guitar I ever owned! hehe.

I have 2 rg550dy's and let me tell you i couldnt live without em
And i have also played the 770dx and ill admit the one i played felt good but my dy's play just as well so why spend the extra money?

Without the colours and the different name, the 770 is no different to a 550. I'd say grab a mid 90's to early 2000's 550. That lovely neck and great performance, you won't be dissapointed.
