Which wood would be best?
Hey guys.
At the moment I've come to a dead end: which wood will give me strong attack, screamy and punchy sound for solos and fast playing?
Mahogany or Basswood?
I've been looking at Ibanez guitars on Ibanezrules.com and I've got a few candidates: RG20062/63, RG3520Z and RG2620.
I've heard lots of opinions about mahogany and basswood but doesn't it all in fact depend on usage of "treble, bass and mid" knobs on your amp?
Will the darker sound of mahogany body and bright maple top sound more "dead" than easy and light basswood?
There is not much to choose from when it comes to good basswood Ibanezes
.
Has any of you tried/tested/own any of above guitars and could help me somehow with this stuff?
I need every opinion-you've got a mahogany axe? Good: write something about it's sound.
Same with
mahogany guitars
especially models above.
Thankies.

Re: Which wood would be best?
yes the wood makes a difference to your tone that is not cancelled by the EQ on your amp, you couldnt EQ out he difference between a maple and mahogany body for instance, the snap and attack of maple or ash will never sound like mahogany or korina. this not only goes for the body but applies to the neck and fingerboard too.

From what you are asking, I'd say you'd want an alder body instead of basswood or mahagony. I've got guitars with all 3 woods. They all sound good, but the alder has a "stronger attack" and is more "punchy" than basswood or mahagony.

Now seriously: either basswood or mahogany with a maple top.

Re: Which wood would be best?
Only mahogany ones have got "AAA" maple top.
And one more question: how does
Edge Zero
compare to an old Edge Pro?
Is it less sensitive or somehow better/worse than EP?

keep in mind that on most rg's, the maple top is a very thin veneer, so it's not going to factor in much in altering the tone (i.e., a mahogony rg with a thin maple veneer is still going to sound pretty much like an all mahogony rg). the only exception is probably the rga series, which have thicker arched maple tops.

I am perfectly aware of that, and by a "flamed maple top" I did not mean a "flamed veneer top". I meant, actually, about 1cm of maple on top of mahogany!

Re: Which wood would be best?
Alder or Maple wood will give your guitar a little bit more of a trebly sound and a little bit more attack.
I'm sure you already know, but I'll mention it anyway, a Fender Stratocaster is typically made of Alder and Maple, and a Gibson Les Paul is typically made of Maple and Mahogany.
