Who should get this 540 maple board?

I got a 540R neck with a maple fingerboard the other day. I like it. But what guitar gets it?

I have a 540R HH arriving next week and I have a 540S already. Which should get the maple board? It would be no big deal to swap them around if the guitars had the same colored hardware. Zip, Zip, and the necks get swapped. But changing out the neck hardware from black to chrome to black to chrome is a pita.

So what do you think?
the 540R?
the 540S with chrome hardware?
or the 540S with black hardware?

tough call, they all look good and totally custom, I guess if I had to I'd go blue too. Looks like something Satriani would probably have in his closet from the old days

I like it on the yellow one with the darker hardware, looks pretty sweet to me. I like blue with chrome and dark board boards too though, so if they were mine it would be a win win

Since you have so much free time why not add something useful to the conversation

I don't think anything really useful could be added to a conversation like this...

Seriously, they're all basically the same guitar w hardware (and one paint job) difference. It's not like he's looking at swapping pickups, or something that would really make a diff.

So then maybe if there's nothing useful (in your opinion) to say, just STFU and don't add a snide remark...

I see that you are relatively new to the Jemsite.

These guitars are actually quite different, and that's not even counting the paint job.

The blue one is a 540 Radius, and the yellow is a 540 Saber. In the late 80s Ibanez came out with these among a sea of pointy hair-metal guitars that were the rage at that time.

540Rs are made of Basswood. 540Ss are made of Mahogany. The original 540R Ultra necks are my dream necks. The original 540s Wizard necks were the thinnest on the market.

Joe Satriani would eventually kill the 540R as Ibanez made him the JS Series. The JS guitars are based on the Radius model but are all out of proportion looking compared to the originals. JS necks are honking thick, too.

The Saber got renamed the S-Series because some other manufacturer already owned the Saber name. The first runs of the Saber had mini-toggle switches for turning pickups on/off. Later Ibanez wanted to use a blade switch. But the Saber body is so thin that the space used for the toggle switches wasn't deep enough to accommodate a blade switch. So they came out with a cool black plastic surround for the blade switches. The plastic piece is hiding a larger than normal hole in the guitar that allows the blade switch to be attached above the guitar face. They are the Ibanez equivalent of Gibson's P90 "goof rings".

These links are pretty cool for some history.
