Why don't people know how to bid??????
I thought I would just throw out the fact that a lot folks don't
know how to bid on online auctions!!!
The object is to get the gear (as that is what most of
us would be buying) for the cheapest amount we can.
My problem is, why put 10 bids on a RG550 with no reserve
in the 1st day and jack the price up when the auction has
4-5 days to go?? If people would wait until AT LEAST an hour
or two before the auction ends to start bidding, folks wouldn't
have to overcome the unnecessary early bidding amounts
AND THEY WOULD GET A BETTER DEAL....
Think about it...
Just food for thought...

It could be intentional - to jack up the price.

I guess this would be the modern equivalent to "crank calling"? You jack up the prices on people auctions just to mess with them? What happens when they win the auction though I wonder?
hehe

Re: Why don't people know how to bid??????
Cause thats lame, thats why. Say you want a guitar for $500. You put $500 as your maximum bid, and it doesn't matter WHEN other people bid. Whats the difference if everyone sets their max bid in the last hour or a couple of days before hand. At least then you don't get surprised by a price hike of $400 in the last hour of the auction. In my opinion, and thats all it is, set your price the day before and forget about it, unless you change your mind about how much you're willing to spend.

Re: Why don't people know how to bid??????
Let me guess, you wanted the guitar for a ridiculous amount of money and didn't win the auction, so now you're basically complaining because you couldn't get the 550 for 100 bucks? Sometimes it pays to be realistic about the price you want to pay for a guitar before you even bid.
With that being said, auctions are auctions and people are free to bid at anytime during the course of the auction. In the end, whether you bid at the beginning or in the end, the final price of the item won't change much one way or another unless it's a sought after item like a mint LNG or JS10th.
Lately, the trend has been that in the last few seconds of the auction, someone will come in and enter his/her bid right after yours (which also happens to be the highest bid), and take the item off your hands.
There really isn't a right or wrong way to bid in an auction in order to win it, make sure you remember that little fact

Re: Why don't people know how to bid??????
Valid points both of you, and I do this too with an item that i know I want and I know the value of, but sometimes you come across something you weren't expecting to see and you wonder how much you can get it for so you wait and see how the bidding goes before you decide whether or not to make a bid on it. Like Jimmy said, there's no right or wrong way to bid.

Because...haven't you noticed when the auction is down to
the last 30-45 seconds the SAME people/person will bid 2-3 times
to try and win it?? That tells me that "their" max bid was not
the 1st bid they placed. This is what I see most of the time..
Am I making sense??

No! you're not making sense! it is an auction and it sells to the highest bidder regardless of how early or late you placed your bid. Read Jimmy's post and find some further enlightenment.

Re: Why don't people know how to bid??????
People bid how they wish. Some are smart, some..., well, that's how the world is.
Bid high early on a common item, no big deal, it's probably only going to sell for X anyway.
Bid high early on something rarer and more desirable, you're just inviting a combatant to bid against you until he finally outbids you. Before the snipes even start.
I've seen plenty of auctions at their max with days left to go and not a single bid placed after.
Nothing is ever set in stone.

Re: Why don't people know how to bid??????
I personally bid the amount I'm willing to pay when I see the auction and if I get outbid it wasn't meant to be.

Re: Why don't people know how to bid??????
1. It is perfectly reasonable for people to bid their valuation early. The object goes to the person with the highest valuation.
If you bid over your valuation you run the risk of winning at that price and being worse off.
If you bid less than your valuation you run the risk of losing the object at a price lower than your valuation.
For some people, especially those with little time to snipe, it makes sense to bid their true valuation early. This is true even if they don't know the valuation of others.
2. It is also perfectly reasonable to "jump bid" (ie, bid early by more than the minimal increment). This is a signal that you value the good and may be willing to jack up the price so that if somebody competes with you they run the risk of overpaying.
everything said in this thread is consistent with the above.

This is what I'm saying, if people wait until later, the
combatants can start trying to outbid each other
AT A LOWER PRICE... if the situation is right, of course.
I know there are "jackers" out there, my neghibor was a car
wholesaler and a few folks got caught at the auctions
hiring people to "jack" the price of their cars up..I know that
if some one looks at a JS10th and knows the can only go
a certain amount and goes ahead and bids his/her max early
then what I'm talking about won't apply.
I understand that. I just think that people shouldn't assume that
"someone's going to do it anyway so why shouldn't I do it too...
This is a possible senerio, I think folks should try to avoid it if
possible.
