Why the RG550?
Hey, this is probably a noob question, but I'm generally curious as to why the RG550 keeps popping up in discussions, and when I ask about buying a new guitar I get constantly told to check out the '550.
I've never had the privilage of playing on one, so I'm very curious as to why everyone thinks this guitar is such a legend. Does it feel better? Sound better? Etc.
Please enlighten!
...Silver.

Re: Why the RG550?
simply put - its a fudging great guitar.
slim fast neck, questionably THE best floating bridge made when setup correctly and its a joy to play.
its good for many styles and its got a fairly decent pickup combo even stock, they work pretty well.
can be hard to describe EXACTLY what makes it so perfect, but if you ever get your hands on one - it just works. the old 'how long is a piece of string question' comes to mind - but its defiantely worth checking out

Re: Why the RG550?
So basically it just has that magical "X-Factor" that everyone wishes for when trying to find a guitar? Cool, I'll have to check it out, or get one from the 'bay.

The RG-5xx series represent a lot of bang for your buck.

So the question is whether to buy the re-issue or the original.

Re: Why the RG550?
Personally I'd go for the earlier models but the reissue will do just fine. The RG550 is an awesome and very verstile guitar that represents amazing value for money. They will easily stand up to something costing double the price. For my money apart from J Customs and Jems the RG550 is probably the best pound for pound guitar that Ibanez have made.

Re: Why the RG550?
i really wanted a re-issue in dy, i was skint at the time and so had to sit and be depressed whilst i watched them slowly disapear out of sight. Gutted! I think that the rg548 was a stunning good value axe at very sensible money and now seem to be rare. but you are right daemon, best pound for pound is a 550. be all and end all. it gave all guitarists a high quality instrument at less cash that us alternatives that wasn't a generic clone, that was the significant thing with them. the first guitar realistically ever to do that.

Re: Why the RG550?
Totally agree fretboardpyro. Great guitar. I'm on the lookout for one at the mo. There's one gonna go for a great price tonight on the bay (UK) by the looks of things.

So am I right in saying that the '550 is on par with a decent JEM? If so I'm hitting the bay!
