ZR Trem

I finally had a chance to try one of these (local Ibanez dealer finally getting some decent stuff in, including a signature model *gasp*, too bad it's a JS100 ). It felt great, seemed to stay in tune great (didn't plug it in, but the guitar sounded great unplugged). The guitar it was mounted on (S-series of course, can't remember what model exactly) looked, felt, and played amazingly. However this particular model had a problem with the bridge: It moved Every time I pushed down or pulled up on the bar the bottom left (from playing perspective) corner of the bridge shifted up and down on the screw(stud?) that was holding it in, making a nasty pop sound I'm sure you're all imagining in your head right now. Is this a common problem, or did I happen to come across a terribly set up guitar? (wouldn't surprise me, from the looks of most guitars in there the guys behind the counter don't know the first thing about setting up Ibanez bridges, much less other floating bridges).

The only way I can see that happening is if the insert was pulling up, and tuning should have been pretty bad then

Well, like I said, the tuning seemed pretty good, but I wasn't plugged in, and definitely wasn't using a tuner of any kind

Now that I think about it more maybe the "retainer" part was just loose. [I haven't pulled a ZR apart yet and I don't feel like opening a kit to check ]

Well, here's the part that was moving (and the model of guitar I was playing I think):

It was moving up and down about 0.5-1mm on the stud-looking thing and making the popping noise I mentioned above.

I know there's a nut there that clamps the bearing assembly to the stud. If it's loose you'll definately get play.

It did look like there was something on the post that was loose. Is that what you're talking about?

Bah, I don't really care as I'm not planning to buy the thing, I'm just wondering if this is a problem with the bridge or a problem with the set up.
