Re: 80's mij squiers
Late last year i had the chance to play a friends early 90's MIJ Squire, and it shocked me at how well it played and felt. I offered him $$$ to take it off his hands, but he downright refused to sell it. Don't blame him, if it was mine i would have done the same, it played like a dream.

Re: 80's mij squiers
The kit is a few resistors you swap to brighten it up - the stock amp is quite dark sounding. Works a treat and is very easy to fit. I think it was $25.
I'm done modding the valve junior (as I have a new amp on the way), so I'll be selling it shortly.

Re: 80's mij squiers
MIJ Squiers are very nice guitars. I prefer them over most MIMs. They are very nice with playability and quality. A wiring upgrade wouldn't hurt from the get go. I have a few of these that i modded and they turned out great. This is how I rate fender's line..

Re: 80's mij squiers
I used to have one in Lake Placid Blue, and man, have I been kicking myself for getting rid of it (which was a long time ago) - I traded it for a multi-effect unit and a drum machine, which was a good deal at the time.
But they are awesome deals for the money IMO.

I have an Indonesian Standard, and it actually impressed me enough to part with my MIM at the time. Solid Alder, and it has a really nice resonance. I hated the 70s-style CBS headstock, so I reshaped it to the smaller design, dropped in a JB jr., and an antique
white pearloid pickguard
. I love that guitar. It has exactly the sound and feel I was looking for. Like any guitar, you just need to try it before you guy it.

Hey, I'll trade you a LPB MIJ Squier AND the identical matching LPB MIK Squier for a nice VM-1! Plus I'll toss in a drum machine and a multi-effects processor - you just really can't lose here. Z

VM-1 - who's got one of those? If I had one, I don't think I'd get rid of it
Just kidding...
And just so you know - I'm still thinking it over... but not likely for the Squiers!

sorry the questions seem a little vague, any help appreciated.
My dad has an '87 Squier Tele, and it's pretty good. It plays great, and it sounds okay. It's MIJ.

I don't think that's how it is anymore. Apparently Fender threw some money at the quality control department in Indonesia a while back and it has really paid off, that's why the Squier Vintage Modified series are such a hit. Check out the reviews on Musician's Friend for the Squier Vintage Modified Jazz Bass. I can't link to it because the board filters out the URL.
I also disagree on the MIA / MIJ thing -- I have seen more consistent quality from Japan than the USA.

Me too. It looks awful. I really like the small headstock with the large logo, like on the early Squier's.

I rated MIAs over the MIJ because MIA has been around much much longer and the older MIAs are like heaven to your fingers. I'll take a nice 1960s strat anyday

Re: 80's mij squiers
I've got one JV 70's style and one SQ 70's style. Both
Olympic White
with maple and rosweood fretboards, respectively. I wouldn't hesitate the next time you see one.
