A very random guitar project...

Okay, so here's the basic idea guys:

What i want to do is get the most affordable double neck 6-string possible.

What do you reckon would be the best way about going to do this? I looked up the Warmoth custom route and that comes in at around £900 (way too much for a random fun project like this).

The other idea i had was to get a double-neck Epiphone SG and just use 6-string on both necks (would this work?)


Some of the things i want to do is to do include:

Top neck tunned to something different like Cadd9, Bottom neck tunned to Standard E. I'd also like to put a Floyd Rose onto the bottom neck. Would this be madness to do on the Epiphone SG?

Also, i'm thinking about putting Dimarzio X2N's into it or another high output pickup (EMG's seem a bit over the top plus X2N's and the similar go for cheaper and i prefer their tone) - mainly in the bridge position of both necks.


Main reason i'd want to do this is because i saw the double neck Ibanez S-series guitars (the 7/6 and the 12/6 string versions) and thought to myself how cool it would be to come onstage with a double necked 6-string sort of animal and just really scare people Only problem is - Those Ibanez doublenecks are bloody hard to come by! Sorry if this seems a bit mental, but i thought i'd be pretty cool

Any ideas on which would be the most "ecconomical" way of doing this crazy project? Any answers accepted (mad, serious whatever!)

You can always buy two cheap @$$ guitars and then just chop them 3/4 of the way and join them.

Buy an Epiphone double neck SG, new pickups and get it routed for a floyd rose, and let me know how much under 900 you come.

I think the only way to do it easily (if you can't buy the double bubble that you want) is to do as budd royce says and buy two 6 strings. You could probably get a body made , although cutting in half and gluing might work ok, and it would be cheaper. I would be prepared to give it a go, and I work in West Sussex, so I am sure we could work somethig out.

There was a thread on another forum where somebody took two guitars, cut them and joined them to make a double. Seems like they had to cut a piece of wood to insert between the two cut bodies to get a usable spacing that still looked nice then did a little contouring by hand to make everything flow together nicely. Once it was refinished it actually looked quite nice. Now if I can just remember where I saw it I'll add the link...

Okay guys, taking the Warmoth route and taking the "Cheap and cheerful" route, i've managed to get it to around £600~ for this:




I've decided not to go down the Floyd Rose route, as that's so exspensive for a "fun" guitar + it'd be tunning hell

IMHO, this is alot cooler then buying a double neck SG... though bare in mind it is a rough bash on MSpaint

Yeah that'd be one idea that i'm contemplating, but it seems a pain in the arse what with scratchplates and all. It'd probably come to the same price anyway

I have had this idea myself. My conclusion was to buy 2 Ibanez RG321's and have their body joined and refinished by a good luthier. (Well actually I thought of a 321 and a 7321 ...7/6!!!)

I imagine that would be slightly weird because the 321's are made of mahogany and the 7321s are made of basswood.

I had a random go at making it though (i'm really bored):





This actually seems like a pretty good idea. I'm thinking about selling my RG321MH and my old RG7420... But prehaps i can do this

Actually, I believe the standard 321 is made of basswood, so it probably would be a perfect match!!!

My idea is to eventually buy both used, which would be really cheap, and had the body worked out, so both have direct mounted pickups, and the simplest electronics...if the beast works, then you can buy some good gotoh bridges (like the ones on PGM's), good pickups, tuners and there it is!!!

Ah there must be a different 321 then because the one i own is made out of mahogany
