Re: Any players use single coils for metal?

my brother just bought a fender deluxe players with noiseless pups and they sound kind of weak compared to humbuckers but still great tones, to get a heavy distortion he has to set his pedals at maximum gain lol

That was an ESP, and it was mostly strat cleans thruout the song and the solos... The heavyness came from James' EMGs in the explorer

btw, there was this skinny young guy whose name i never remember that played for Ozzy after Zakk left, in the ozzmosis tour or something, i know i saw a video for live Perry Mason and the guy had a sunburst strat... Sounded pretty great if you ask me...

Yeah, it was Joe Holmes. Forgot all about him. Although I know he used a humbucker in the bridge of some of the Strats he used.

And then there was Bernie Tormé, who joined after Randy of course in 1982. He used single coils in a Strat as well.

I don't think anyone is saying you can't use single coils for metal, but if you want a Killswitch Engage type tone (which is what the original poster asked), you are gonna need humbuckers, and hot ones at that.

Personally, I have never heard a true single coil pickup that I like the sound of when heavily distorted. They just sound like they have had their balls cut off to me.

Rock on!

+1, my custom guitar has two singles and a humbucker in the bridge, i find that to be the most versatile combo for what i play. The Dimarzio Cruiser in the neck gives me a really nice fluid lead tone for Vai/Satch type stuff, and the Steve Special in the bridge gets me all the chug i need.

Exactly. The lead tones from single in the neck position are so fluid sounding, great for arpeggios/sweeping and for punctuating fast runs too.

Malmsteen actually plays on the neck pickup a whole lot.

Personally I still prefer a humbucker, because it's hard to control all the noise with a single-coil at such high gain levels.
There are bright and transparent-sounding humbuckers that can get pretty close to that Malmsteen sound for the neck.
A DiMarzio PAF Pro is quite nice for example.

Re: Any players use single coils for metal?

I split an Evolution 7 to a single coil about 25% of the time in my band, and we play some pretty heavy stuff. And on larger stages (where I'm further away from the amp) I sometimes use a mahogany Telecaster with Seymour Duncan Quarter Pounder single coils.

Devin Townsend's "Terria" album is almost all single coil (a silver Strat) and it's hella heavy. Check out "Earth Day" and "Mountain."

Now I know why I don't like the tone on that album.

Hevvy Devvy kicks ass though.

Rock on!

Kirk also owns a spectacularly nice Pre-CBS Seafoam Green Strat which has appeared in at least one Metallica clip that I have seen, whether that means the guitar was used on that particular track is impossible to determine.
