Re: Any players use single coils for metal?

UPDATE:

Just bought a 2008 Fender American Standard on Saturday. I threw in my Samarium Cobalt noiseless single coil set in, threw on my usual thick strings, tuned down to drop-c, and I'm in Heaven

I get all of the low end chunka chunka I need, but when it's time to throw in a crazy, blood-curdling squeal, it just leaps out of the amp like NON of my hum-equipped guitars. As a matter of fact, I can barely get a squeal at all out of my EMG-equipped RG550. WTH?

Back to the Strat....I'm really digging the tone that the alder body and thick, one piece maple neck provides. Acoustically as well as plugged in, it absolutely destroys all of my RG's. In fact, I've since put them all away. Well, all except my custom mahogany RG7620 of course .

Malmsteen doesn't use single coils. He uses stacked humbuckers. HS1 HS2 etc and he has his own sig pups, all stacked humbuckers.

I agree. The first RATM album had some awesome distorted tones and a stock Tele through a 50W Marshall half-stack is apparently what he used (along with the obligatory pedals of course)

I think Reb Beach used/uses single coils with his past
Ibanez and Surh guitars.

Re: Any players use single coils for metal?

Well guys, I cheated. I got bored over the weekend and thought, "Hmm...I wonder how my new Strat would sound with my EMG 85 in the bridge and splittable EMG 89 in the neck?" Well, the answer is...AMAZING.

Haha, so much for my single coil streak. I'd still like to buy another Strat and keep singles in it, just for the bluesy and clean stuff.

Paul Masvidal of Cynic, Death and AEon Spoke used the single coils in his Steinberger guitars all the time. See Lack of Comprehension's intro and the fill in the verse where Chuck does the obligitory brutal breakdown style riff.
True they were EMG's of some description, but they were singles. No other way to get that cutting tone.

I always use my Fender Strats with single coils for metal! They don`t get as heavy as humbuckers but the tone is more defined IMO which i really like!!

The guys from Athiest for that matter used Strats with Single Coils...
They were both Left handed too.

Single coils with lots of gain will cut through the mix very well. I play old school metal with a Telecaster sometimes. We're doing Sabbath and stuff and it sounds great. Can't comment on the newer metal stuff.

Re: Any players use single coils for metal?

^^^ Yes and no. They are stacked but according to Dimarzio they still arent TRUE humbucking PU's... That said they still arent true Singles either... You can hook them up to coil taps im told.
